Newport Wasps were a British motorcycle speedway team based at Somerton Park and then the Hayley Stadium in Newport, South Wales, from 1964 to 2012. The Wasps logo incorporates the traditional black and amber colours of the City of Newport. History 1960s Speedway in Newport arrived at Somerton Park (also the home of football) for the 1964 Provincial Speedway League season (division 2). The greyhound racing owners of Somerton Park had recently put the stadium up for sale and ended the greyhound racing in October 1963. The tight speedway track meant that turf had to be brought on to make the corner flag area for football matches and removed once the match had finished. Wally Mawdsley
Walter Mawdsley (30 November 1926 – 12 February 2009) was a motorcycle speedway rider, manager and promoter from England. He was the team manager of the England national speedway team from to 1983 to 1984. Biography Mawdsley, born in Salford, Greater Manchester, was a despatch rider during World War II. He began his British leagues career riding for Rayleigh Rockets during the 1949 Speedway National League Division Three season. It was the inaugural league season of speedway at Rayleigh organised by Messrs. Greavey and Rundle. The following season in 1950, Plymouth Devils signed Mawdsley on a free transfer from Norwich Stars, who held his contract. His riding career was underwhelming, averaging a best 4.58 in 1949. Mawdsley finished racing after the 1951 season but would later decide to concentrate on promoting. Grant Tregoning
Grant Tregoning (born 26 January 1988) is former international motorcycle speedway rider from New Zealand. Career Tregoning began riding speedway at Moore Park in Christchurch when he was 13 years old. He won the New Zealand under-21 championship for the first time when he was 16 and won it again in the 2007–08 and 2008–09 seasons. He was offered a place in the Mildenhall Fen Tigers team in 2008 but due to a delay with his visa was unable to take his place. However, he was able to travel to Europe in May to compete in a World under-21 qualifying round in Norden, and after this rode in two meetings in England for the Buxton Hitmen in the Conference League. In 2009, he rode for the Newport Hornets in the National League where he achieved a 6.81 average for the season. In August he paired with Tony Atkin to win the National League Pairs Championship. The Premier League was the second tier of Motorcycle speedway, speedway in the United Kingdom (with the exception of the 1995 and 1996 seasons) and governed by The Speedway Control Bureau (SCB), in conjunction with the British Speedway Promoters' Association (BSPA). The Premier League was founded in 1995 when the two divisions of the British League were amalgamated. In 1997, the Elite League (speedway), Elite League was created as a new top tier with the Premier League becoming the second tier. The league operated until 2016 when British speedway was restructured with the formation of the SGB Premiership and SGB Championship. The Bristol Bulldogs were a British motorcycle speedway team based at the Knowle Stadium, Bristol, England from 1928 to 1961Bamford, R & Jarvis J.(2001). The 1975 Gulf Oil British League season was the 41st season of the top tier of motorcycle speedway in the United Kingdom and the 11th season known as the British League. Summary The league was sponsored for the first time by Gulf Oil. Reading Racers returned after a one-season absence to increase the size of the league back to eighteen teams and the ban on overseas riders that rode in other leagues abroad was lifted. The Ipswich Witches won their first title, defeating Belle Vue Aces by a solitary point. John Louis and Billy Sanders scored heavily throughout the season for Ipswich. Reidar Eide (6 November 1940 – February 1999) was a Norwegian motorcycle speedway rider, who was champion of Norway on five occasions.
