Newport HSOB RFC
Newport High School Old Boys (NHSOB) are a Wales, Welsh rugby union club based in Caerleon on the northern outskirts of Newport, Wales, Newport in South Wales. They currently play in the WRU Division Two East, Welsh Rugby Union Division Two and is a feeder club for the Dragons (rugby union), Newport Gwent Dragons. The team is led by ex Dragons, Ulster, Newport, Llanelli, Bargoed and Wales U18’s star Niall Martin. Known for his fierce mediocrity with the boot and mixed ability to manage games when in winning positions. Newport HSOB RFC were recognised by the Welsh Rugby Union as the biggest community rugby club in Wales in November 2007. The club provides a full range of teams for all age groups and a full female team at all levels. They have ex-players at all levels of the game. Caerleon
Caerleon ( ; ) is a town and Community (Wales), community in Newport, Wales. Situated on the River Usk, it lies northeast of Newport city centre, and southeast of Cwmbran. Ceri Jones
Ceri Rhys Jones (born 19 June 1977) is a Welsh professional rugby union coach and former player. He is currently the head coach of North Wales side RGC 1404. As a player, he typically played as a loosehead prop, but he could also play tighthead. His father, Lyn Jones, played as a lock for Ebbw Vale and Newport, as well as making appearances for Wales B in the 1970s. Jones played for Newport High School Old Boys and Usk before making his Welsh Premiership debut for Newport in December 1998. He scored his first try against Pontypridd in March 1999, the only one he scored in 18 appearances during the 1998–99 season. He scored four tries in 26 appearances the following season, but then failed to cross the whitewash in 54 appearances across the next three seasons. Rio Dyer
Rio Dyer (born 21 December 1999) is a Welsh professional rugby union player who plays as a wing for United Rugby Championship club Dragons and the Wales national team. Club career Dyer began his career playing for the Risca RFC and Pill Harriers RFC youth sides, as well as for Newport High School Old Boys RFC. While part of the Dragons Academy, Dyer made his professional debut on 27 January 2018, against Saracens in the Anglo-Welsh Cup. His first appearance in the Pro14 came against Benetton Rugby the following month. Dyer was named man of the match on 4 January 2020, as the Dragons beat regional rivals Ospreys 25–18, with Dyer scoring a try in the victory. Stuart Watkins
Stuart Watkins (born 5 June 1941) was a Welsh international rugby union wing who played club rugby for Newport and Cardiff. Watkins began his rugby career at Cross Keys before switching to Newport in 1963, staying with the club for the majority of his career. In 1970, in a dispute about training, Watkins left Newport to join rival club Cardiff. International career Watkins made his international debut for Wales against Scotland on 1 February 1964. Played at the Cardiff Arms Park, it was Scotland's only defeat of the season and would be the key game in Wales winning the championship that year. Watkins would represent his country on 26 occasions, and his most notable game came against France on 26 March 1966. David Watkins (rugby)
David Watkins (5 March 1942 – 3 September 2023) was a Welsh dual-code rugby international, having played both rugby union and rugby league football for both codes' national teams between 1963 and 1979. He captained the British and Irish Lions rugby union side, and made six appearances for the Great Britain rugby league team. With the Wales national rugby league team he played in every match of the 1975 World Cup, and with English club Salford he played more than 400 games over 12 seasons. Alex Walker (rugby Union, Born 1986)
Alex Walker (born 31 July 1986, Newport) is a former Welsh rugby union player. He is a Wales sevens international. A scrum-half, Walker played for Newport HSOB and Newport RFC before joining Newport Gwent Dragons. During the 2008–09 season he was loaned to London Welsh. He was released by Newport Gwent Dragons in August 2010 and joined Eastwood Rugby Club in Sydney, Australia. In July 2011 he joined the Scarlets. He was selected for the Wales Sevens squad for 2012-13 After two years at Cardiff Blues, Walker joined London club Ealing Trailfinders Rugby Club, where he was subsequently named club captain for the 2016-17 Greene King IPA Championship season. Ashley Smith (born 13 February 1987 in Caerleon, Newport, Wales) is a retired Welsh rugby union player who played as a centre for Newport Gwent Dragons. Matthew Fitz David Robinson is a Welsh former professional rugby union player. A centre or wing, Robinson began his rugby career at Newport High School Old Boys before joining Swansea. He made his debut for Wales in the 1999 Five Nations Championship match against Scotland on 6 February 1999. Alix Popham
Alix Jon Popham (born 17 October 1979) is a Welsh former rugby union player who played as a number eight or flanker. Born in Newport, he began his career with Newport RFC in 1998, before moving to Leeds Tykes in 2002. He spent three years in England before returning to Wales with the Llanelli Scarlets in 2005. In 2008, he moved to France to play for Brive and was made captain ahead of the 2009–10 season. He retired due to injury at the end of the 2010–11 season, having made over 320 appearances in 13 years as a professional. He also played internationally for the Wales national team, earning 33 caps.
