George Newlands
George McLeod Newlands is a Scottish theologian widely published in the fields of modern systematic theology, Christology, emancipatory theology, and the history of Christian thought. He is Emeritus Professor of Divinity, Glasgow, Professor of Divinity at the University of Glasgow, and served as Chair of the Theology, Divinity & Religious studies, Religious Studies panel of the UK's 2008 Research Assessment Exercise and as President of the Society for the Study of Theology for 2013–14. Career Newlands held the 1577/1640 Professor of Divinity, Glasgow, Chair of Divinity at the University of Glasgow from 1986 to 2008. He was previously a University Lecturer at the University of Cambridge and Dean of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, Trinity Hall. Henry William Newlands
Henry William Newlands (March 19, 1862 – August 9, 1954) was a Canadian politician and lawyer, who served as the fourth lieutenant governor of Saskatchewan, 1921 to 1931. Biography Born in March 1862 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Henry William Newlands was the son of James and Henrietta Newlands, and was educated in Halifax. Newlands was called to the Nova Scotia Bar in 1883, after which he would go on to have an important role in the domain of law. That same year, he moved to Western Canada, residing briefly in Winnipeg. In 1885, Newlands moved to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan where he practiced law. He also served as inspector of land titles offices in the Northwest Territories as well as law adviser to the Yukon Executive Council. In 1902, Newlands served as Acting Commissioner for several months when Commissioner James Hamilton Ross was elected MP for Yukon in the House of Commons of Canada. John Newlands (Australian Politician)
Sir John Newlands (4 August 1864 – 20 May 1932), also known as John Newland, was a Scottish-born Australian politician. Born in Cawdor, Nairnshire, Newlands was the son of Andrew Newlands, agricultural labourer, and his wife Ann, ''née'' Stunar. Newlands was educated in Croy, Scotland before migrating to New South Wales, Australia in 1883. He married Theresa Glassey on 27 February 1884 in Adelaide, and that year began to use Newland as his surname. He became a railway worker, also in 1884, initially as a lamp cleaner and porter. While a conductor on the Broken Hill express, he and a fellow-conductor developed a gambling system that so impressed a group of mining magnates that they bankrolled a trip for the two to Monte Carlo. Fortune eluded them however, and they returned to Adelaide with a new respect for mathematics. John Alexander Reina Newlands
John Alexander Reina Newlands (26 November 1837 – 29 July 1898) was a British chemist who worked concerning the periodicity of elements. Biography Newlands was born in London in England, at West Square in Southwark, the son of a Scottish Presbyterian minister and his Italian wife. Newlands was home-schooled by his father, and later studied at the Royal College of Chemistry, now part of Imperial College London. He was interested in social reform and during 1860 served as a volunteer with Giuseppe Garibaldi in his military campaign to unify Italy. Returning to London, Newlands established himself as an analytical chemist in 1864. In 1868 he became chief chemist of James Duncan's London sugar refinery, where he introduced a number of improvements in processing. Later he quit the refinery and again became an analyst with his brother, Benjamin. James Newlands
James Newlands (28 July 1813 – 15 July 1871) was a Scotland, Scottish civil engineer who worked in Liverpool as the first Borough Engineer appointed in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, United Kingdom. He is credited with designing and implementing the first integrated sewerage system in the world in 1848. His new sewerage system prevented raw sewage from contaminating drinking water thereby reducing the number of deaths caused by cholera and other water-borne diseases. Early life Newlands was born in Edinburgh, the third of nine children of Janet Mckay and Thomas Newlands, a ropemaker. He attended the Royal High School, Edinburgh and then studied mathematics and natural philosophy at the University of Edinburgh.
