Alex Newhook
Alex Newhook (born January 28, 2001) is a Canadian professional ice hockey centre for the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected in the first round, 16th overall, by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2019 NHL entry draft and won the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2022, becoming the third player from Newfoundland and Labrador to do so, following Daniel Cleary (2008) and Michael Ryder (2011). Playing career Early years As a youth, Newhook left his native Newfoundland to play hockey for St. Andrew's College, a boarding school located in Aurora, Ontario. Thereafter, he joined the York Simcoe Express of the Eastern AAA Hockey League (ETAHL) where he served as team captain and was named as the U16 AAA Player of the Year across the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) in 2017. Cle Newhook
Cleophas (Cle) Newhook (June 3, 1943 – March 2, 2018) was a Canadian theologian, author and politician in Newfoundland. Newhook was leader of the Newfoundland and Labrador New Democratic Party from 1989 to 1992. However, he was unsuccessful in several attempts to win a seat for himself in the House of Assembly. Prior to becoming party leader he was the NDP's executive secretary as well as a candidate. Frank Newhook
Francis John Newhook (16 November 1918 – 1 December 1999) was the head of the School of Plant Pathology at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. He was the first plant pathologist at the university, from 1966 (sponsored by New Zealand Forest Products) as an associate professor, and from 1969 a personal chair. Previously he was a scientist at the DSIR. Newhook was born in Auckland on 16 November 1918. He was educated at Auckland Grammar School and the University of Auckland. He married (1) Agnes Marjorie Anderson (three children) and (2) pianist Janetta McStay. In World War II he was a Major in the 2nd NZEF in the Middle East and Italy. Newhook published extensively on fungal pathogens, especially ''Phytophthora'', and wrote over 90 scientific papers and other publications. Hazel Newhook
Hazel Rose Newhook (December 24, 1914 – June 26, 2016) was a Canadian politician, who sat in the Newfoundland House of Assembly from 1979 to 1985 as a member of the Progressive Conservatives, where she represented the electoral district of Gander. She also served as mayor of Gander from 1973 to 1977. Newhook and her caucus colleague Lynn Verge were appointed to the Executive Council of Newfoundland by Premier Brian Peckford in 1979, becoming the first two women ever to serve in the provincial cabinet.
