Newell is a coastal town and rural locality in the Shire of Douglas, Queensland, Australia. It is a sugarcane growing district. In the , the locality of Newell had a population of 327 people. Geography The locality is bounded to the west by the Mossman Daintree Road and a cane tramway line to the Mossman Sugar Mill and to the east by the Coral Sea. It is partly bounded to the north by Coop Creek and Saltwater Creek and to the south by the Mossman River, which enters the Coral Sea at the south-eastern point of the locality. The town is spread along on the coastline with most houses only two streets from the beach. USS ''Newell'' (DE 322) was an Edsall-class destroyer escort built for the U.S. Navy during World War II. She served in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and provided destroyer escort protection against submarine and air attack for Navy vessels and convoys. Post war, she served in various capacities before being finally decommissioned. Namesake Byron Bruce Newell was born on 29 November 1909 in Camp Hill, Alabama. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy on 5 June 1930. During the next decade he completed flight training and served on the , , , and at the Naval Observatory, Washington. D.C. In August 1939 he reported to cargo ship ''Gold Star'', home ported at Guam, before returning to Newport News for fitting out of the aircraft carrier . Newell is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Hancock County, West Virginia, United States, along the Ohio River. The population was 1,203 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Weirton–Steubenville metropolitan area and is best known as home to the Fiesta Tableware Company. History Hamilton, a small town across the Ohio River from Wellsville, Ohio, was laid out by William Hamilton south of the current site of Newell.
