The New Zealand Film Archive was established in 1981. On 1 August 2014 the archive was amalgamated with Sound Archives Ngā Taonga Kōrero and the Television New Zealand Archive to form Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision. 2009 lost film recovery In early 2009, a collection of 75 American silent films previously thought to be lost , were discovered in the New Zealand Film Archive. Television New Zealand Archive
The Television New Zealand Archive collection contains over 600,000 hours of television spanning almost 55 years of New Zealand's public television history. It includes New Zealand content such as documentaries, dramas, sports programmes and every TVNZ news broadcast from December 1986 to 2014. The archive only holds titles that have previously been broadcast – raw footage is not included. The archive also includes thousands of photographic stills. Both TVNZ and the Ministry for Culture and Heritage hold a list of the titles held in the TVNZ Archive collection. This has subsequently been released under the Official Information Act. The Ministry considers the majority of titles to be of high heritage and cultural value and the Minister of Broadcasting Craig Foss stated it was a "unique record of life in New Zealand". Upstream (film)
''Upstream'' is a 1927 American comedy film directed by John Ford. A "backstage drama", the film is about a Shakespearean actor and a woman from a knife-throwing act. The film was considered to be a lost film, but in 2009 a print was discovered in the New Zealand Film Archive. It is considered to be the first Ford film to show some influence of German director F. W. Murnau, who began working at Fox Studios in 1926. From Murnau, Ford learned how to use forced perspectives and chiaroscuro lighting, which the American director then integrated into his own more naturalistic and direct filmmaking style. National Film Library, New Zealand
The National Film Library (NFL) was established in 1942 following the gifting of some documentary films by the British Council, Government Film Studios and Ministry of Information for use in New Zealand schools. From its founding until 1963 the library had Walter Harris (1903-1990) as its head. Previously a geography teacher, and then lecturer at Christchurch Teachers' College, Harris was later succeeded at NFL by Ray Hayes. By 1946 the Education department's annual report noted that there were over 2000 films in the library. In 1956 a British Council donation of almost 1000 gramophone records was also made. By 1972 NFL held around 9000 16 mm film titles, totalling 34 000 prints. NFL also developed a strong supporting role for the Federation of Film Societies, with the Education Department paying for distribution of Society prints around New Zealand. The cinema of New Zealand refers to films made by New Zealand–based production company, production companies in New Zealand or films made about New Zealand by filmmakers from other countries. New Zealand produces many films that are co-financed by overseas companies. The history of cinema in New Zealand is almost as long as the medium itself. The first public screening of a motion picture took place in 1896. A documentary made in 1900 is the oldest surviving New Zealand film, while the first feature film made in New Zealand premiered in 1914. A small-scale industry developed between the 1920s and the 1960s, but it was not until the 1970s that locally made films began to attract significant audiences. ''The White Shadow'', also known as ''White Shadows'' in the United States, is a 1923 British silent drama film directed by Graham Cutts and starring Betty Compson, Clive Brook, and Henry Victor. Plot The plot concerns twin sisters, one who is modest and socially conservative, the other a free spirit who cannot bear the constrictions of a traditional life. Their father's unhappiness over his bohemian daughter's lifestyle leads him to drink and dissolution. The sisters end up having the same man, Robin, in love with them, without him realizing they are two different people. The extant film ends at a most critical juncture, at which both sisters, Robin, and the father meet at a Paris boîte and are about to realize who each other is. ''Mary of the Movies'' is a 1923 American silent semi-autobiographical comedy film based on the career of Marion Mack. It was written by Mack and her husband Louis Lewyn, and stars Mack and Creighton Hale. Hale and director John McDermott play fictionalized versions of themselves in the film, which was also directed by McDermott. It was produced by the CBC Film Sales Corporation (which would later become Columbia Pictures) and distributed by Film Booking Offices. A partial print of the film exists in Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision. Plot Mary, a country girl, moves to Hollywood to become a star, and earn money to pay for her brother's operation. She meets many famous stars, but has difficulty getting work. Finally, she gets a break when her resemblance to a star leads to her being cast in a film. ''Maytime'' is a 1923 American silent romantic drama film directed by Louis J. Gasnier and starring Ethel Shannon, Harrison Ford, and William Norris. The film also features one of Clara Bow's earliest cinema roles. The film is based on the musical of the same name composed by Sigmund Romberg with a book by Rida Johnson Young. A different film with the same name was made in 1937 also based on the musical. Plot Ottilie Van Zandt is forced to wed her cousin, despite her love for Richard Wayne, the gardener's son.
