New York University Shanghai (NYU Shanghai; legal name registered as Shanghai New York University) is a joint-venture university in Pudong, Shanghai, China. It was established in 2012 under a partnership between East China Normal University and New York University. It is the third degree-granting campus of New York University. Jointly established by the two universities with the support from the Shanghai Municipal People's Government in 2012, it was the first Sino-foreign joint university to receive independent legal entity accreditation from the Ministry of Education (China), Ministry of Education of China. Classes are in English and Chinese. Upon graduation, undergraduate students will receive bachelor's degrees from both New York University and New York University Shanghai. Tong Shijun
Tong Shijun (; born September 14, 1958) is a Chinese philosopher and Chancellor of New York University Shanghai. From 2011 to 2019, Tong served as professor of philosophy and party secretary at East China Normal University (ECNU), where he also held several positions in the philosophy faculty and university administration from 1984 to 2004. He served as a researcher and Deputy Party Secretary at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences from 2004 to 2011. Early life and education Tong spent the first six years of his life in a village of Xiaoshan District, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province before moving to Shanghai, where he went to elementary and middle school. Jinqiao () is a town of Pudong, Shanghai, China. It is in the middle of Pudong, with Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park on its south, Huangpu River at its north, overlooking Lujiazui Financial and Trade Center to its west. Pudong New Area
Pudong is a district of Shanghai located east of the Huangpu, the river which flows through central Shanghai. The name ''Pudong'' was originally applied to the Huangpu's east bank, directly across from the west bank or Puxi, the historic city center. Yu was awarded the title of Chancellor Emeritus of NYU Shanghai upon his retirement.
