New York State Route 178
New York State Route 178 (NY 178) is an east–west state highway in Jefferson County, New York, in the United States. It extends for from an intersection with NY 3 by Aspinwell Corners in the town of Henderson to a junction with U.S. Route 11 (US 11) in the village of Adams. NY 178 meets Interstate 81 (I-81) at exit 41 west of its junction with US 11. When NY 178 was assigned in the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York, it continued east along modern County Route 189 (CR 189) to NY 177 in Rodman. This extension was eliminated in 1979. From the early 1930s to the late 1960s, NY 178 also continued west toward Lake Ontario on what is now County Route 178. Route description NY 178 continues eastward from NY 3, passing through a small populated region before entering the hamlet of Henderson. Henderson is a town in Jefferson County, New York, United States. The population was 1,360 at the 2010 census. The town is named after William Henderson, the original European-American land owner. Henderson is in the western part of the county and is southwest of Watertown. The Great Lakes Seaway Trail runs through the town along New York State Route 3 and includes a monument to its founder, William E. Tyson. History This area had long been occupied by the Onondaga people, a nation of the Iroquois Confederacy, a Native American coalition of tribes who controlled most of upstate and western New York around the Great Lakes by the 15th century. Because most nations of the confederacy had allied with the British in the American Revolutionary War, after the defeat of Britain the United States forced the Iroquois to cede most of their land in New York under the terms of the peace treaty. I Love New York
I Love New York (stylized ) is a slogan, a logo, and a song that are the basis of an advertising campaign developed by the marketing firm of Wells, Rich, Greene under the directorship of Mary Wells Lawrence used since 1977 to promote tourism in the state of New York, including New York City. The trademarked logo, owned by the New York State Department of Economic Development, appears in souvenir shops and brochures throughout the state, some licensed, many not. "I Love New York" is the official state slogan of New York. The logo was designed by graphic designer Milton Glaser in 1976 in the back of a taxi and was drawn with red crayon on scrap paper. General Drafting Corporation of Convent Station, New Jersey, founded by Otto G. Lindberg in 1909, was one of the "Big Three" road map publishers in the United States from 1930 to 1970, along with H.M. Gousha and Rand McNally.General Drafting Co., Inc. company brochure, 1982.
