New York wine refers to wine made from grapes grown in the U.S. state of New York. New York ranks third in grape production by volume after California and Washington. The majority of New York's grape area is ''Vitis labrusca'' varieties (mostly Concord). The rest is equally divided between ''Vitis vinifera'' and French hybrids. History The state of New York's wine production began in the 17th century with Dutch and Huguenot plantings in the Hudson Valley region. Commercial production did not begin until the 19th century. New York is home to the first bonded winery in the United States of America, Pleasant Valley Wine Company, located in Hammondsport. Catawba is a red American grape variety used for wine as well as juice, jams and Gelatin dessert, jellies. Grown predominantly on the East Coast of the United States, this purplish-red grape is a likely a hybrid of the native American ''Vitis labrusca'' and the ''Vitis vinifera'' cultivar Semillon. Frontenac (grape)
Frontenac () is an interspecific hybrid grapevine that is a result of research and crossbreeding by the University of Minnesota. It was grown from a crossing of the complex interspecific hybrid Landot 4511 and a very cold-hardy selection of Vitis riparia. It was released in 1996. Frontenac gris is a white wine version of Frontenac, introduced in 2003. It started as a single bud mutation of Frontenac, yielding gray (thus named gris) fruit and amber-colored juice. Frontenac blanc was introduced in 2012 from white fruited mutations found in both Frontenac and Frontenac gris vines in Minnesota and Canada. Delaware (grape)
The Delaware grape is a cultivar derived from the grape species ''Vitis labrusca'' or 'Fox grape' which is used for the table and wine production. The skin of the Delaware grape when ripened has a pale red, almost pinkish colour, a tender skin, and juicy sweet flesh. It has small fruit clusters with small berries that do not have the pronounced 'foxiness' of other ''V. labrusca'' grapes. Seibel grapes are a group of wine grape varieties which originated with the work of French viticulturist Albert Seibel crossing European wine grape with American grape species to increase disease resistance. They were planted widely in France during the 1950s but have seen decline in recent years because French wine law prohibits hybrid grapes in appellation wine.
