New South Wales Mounted Police
The New South Wales Mounted Police Unit is a mounted section of the New South Wales Police Force. Founded by Governor of New South Wales, Governor Thomas Brisbane, Sir Thomas Brisbane on 7 September 1825, the Mounted Police were recruited from the Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment), 3rd Regiment of Foot, stationed in NSW at the time, to protect travellers, recaptured escaped convicts and suppress Australian frontier wars, Indigenous resistance to colonisation. The force remained the mounted division of the colonial forces of Australia, colonial military force in the colony of New South Wales until 1850, when it took on a more civilian role. William Stewart (governor)
William Stewart (1769 – 8 April 1854) was a Scottish-born Australian administrator, politician and soldier. He was born in Caithness to William Stewart. In 1794 he enlisted in the army, serving in the West Indies, Spain, Portugal and Canada and in the occupation of France. In 1825, he was sent to New South Wales as Lieutenant-Governor, holding the post until 182 Stewart married Sylvia Anne ( Wolfe), and was survived by three daughters and one son, James Horne Stewart. After his post ended he went to India, where he became a major general. He returned in 1831 and was granted land near Bathurst. Stewart died there in 1854. Kenneth Snodgrass
Kenneth Snodgrass (1784 – 14 October 1853) was a Scottish-born soldier and colonial administrator. He acted as lieutenant-governor of Van Diemen's Land and governor of New South Wales for brief periods. Early life Snodgrass was born in Paisley, Scotland, the son of the Reverend Dr John Snodgrass, M.A., DD (1744–97), a Presbyterian minister, author and pamphleteer; and Janet, née Mackenzie (1762-1852), who was descended from the Chiefs of Clan Mackenzie of Kintail, in the Scottish Highlands. His brother was John James Snodgrass. Kenneth Snodgrass enlisted in the British Army in 1802 as an ensign and was promoted to lieutenant in 1804. He served in Sicily and Sweden, was promoted captain in 1808, and fought in the Peninsular War with the Portuguese army from 1809 to 1814. ''The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser'' was the first newspaper printed in Australia, running from 5 March 1803 until 20 October 1842. It was a semi-official publication of the government of New South Wales, authorised by Governor Philip King and printed by George Howe. On 14 October 1824, under the editorship of Robert Howe, it ceased to be censored by the colonial government. The Wonnarua people, otherwise written Wanarruwa, are a group of Aboriginal Australian people united by strong ties of kinship, and who survived in family groups or clans scattered along the inland area of what is now known as the Upper Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia. Their creation spirit is ''Baiami'', also known as ''Koin'', the creator of all things and the ''Keeper of the Valley''. Language The origin of the Wonnarua language is unclear; however, linguists group closely related dialects together under the description "language of the Hunter River/Lake Macquarie" (HRLM). The 57th (West Middlesex) Regiment of Foot was a regiment of line infantry in the British Army, raised in 1755. Under the Childers Reforms it amalgamated with the 77th (East Middlesex) Regiment of Foot to form the Middlesex Regiment in 1881. The 40th (the 2nd Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot was an infantry regiment of the British Army, raised in 1717 in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. The Hunter Region, also commonly known as the Hunter Valley, Newcastle Region, or simply Hunter, spans the region in northern New South Wales, Australia, extending from approximately to north of Sydney. It contains the Hunter River and its tributaries with highland areas to the north and south.
