Charles Goodchap
Charles Augustus Goodchap (2 April 1837 – 20 October 1896) was a New South Wales politician. Goodchap was born in Kent, England, and educated at Huntingdon Grammar School. He emigrated to New South Wales in 1853, and obtained a clerkship in the Colonial Secretary's office. He was transferred to the Lands and Works Department in 1856, and, in 1859, to the Department of Public Works. He became Chief Clerk for Railways in 1870, Secretary for Railways in 1875, and Commissioner for Railways in 1878. Goodchap retired from the Civil Service of New South Wales in 1888. He stood as a Protectionist Party, Protectionist candidate in the Results of the 1889 New South Wales colonial election#Redfern, 1889 election for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly seat of Electoral district of Redfern, Redfern and was the fourth candidate elected. Sydney Trains is the brand name and operator of Railways in Sydney, suburban and intercity train services in and around Greater Sydney in New South Wales, Australia. The metropolitan part of the network is a hybrid urban rail, urban-suburban rail system with a central underground core, that covers of route length over of track, with List of Sydney Trains railway stations, 168 stations on nine lines. Within Sydney, the network has frequencies of 5–10 minutes during peak-time at most inner-city and major stations, and 15 minutes off-peak at most minor stations. NSW TrainLink is a regional train and coach operator in Australia, providing services throughout New South Wales and into Australian Capital Territory, the Australian Capital Territory, Victoria (state), Victoria, Queensland and South Australia. Rail Corporation New South Wales (RailCorp) was an agency of the Government of New South Wales, Australia, established in 2004 pursuant to the ''Transport Administration Act 1988''. It was a division under the control of Transport for NSW, following the latter's establishment in 2011. On 20 June 2020, RailCorp was disbanded with its functions taken over by Transport Asset Holding Entity. RailCorp held rail property assets, rolling stock and rail infrastructure in the Sydney metropolitan area and limited country locations in the state, and made those assets available to Sydney Trains and NSW TrainLink for their operations. It also managed the government's contract with the Airport Link Company. State Rail Authority
The State Rail Authority, a former statutory authority of the Government of New South Wales, operated and maintained railways in the Australian state of New South Wales from July 1980 until December 2003. History The ''Transport Authorities Act 1980'' separated the functions of the Public Transport Commission (formerly responsible for all public transport) and established the State Rail Authority. The State Rail Authority assumed responsibility for trains, while the Urban Transit Authority responsibility for buses and ferries. In July 1982 a new colour scheme developed by Phil Belbin of red, yellow, orange and white was unveiled, which was commonly referred to as the "candy colours". William James Cleary (29 December 1885 – 20 July 1973) was an Australian brewery executive who was recruited by the New South Wales government to take the position of Commissioner of the railways during the Great Depression. He was later chairman of the Australian Broadcasting Commission. James Fraser C.M.G., M.Inst. C.E. (20 August 1861 – 28 July 1936) was an Australian-born Chief Commissioner of New South Wales railways from 1917 to 1929. He has been credited with inauguration of Sydney's railway electrification. History Fraser was born in Braidwood, New South Wales, and educated at Sydney Grammar School. He joined the railways as a cadet draftsman or civil engineer, and in 1903 succeeded Thomas Rhodes Firth, his father-in-law, as engineer-in-chief for existing lines. In 1914 he was appointed Assistant Commissioner, and in 1917 became Chief Commissioner, in place of Harper, who was in poor health. John Harper (administrator)
John Harper (1851 – 1 July 1932) was a railways administrator. He served as Chief Commissioner of New South Wales Railways from 1914 to 1917. History Harper was born in Parramatta and educated at Newington College and The King's School, Parramatta, King's School. He spent several years in literary employment, then in 1871 started with the Railways as a clerk in John Whitton's office. In 1877 he was appointed clerk supervising goods staff at Redfern railway station. In 1887 he succeeded G. T. Evans as goods superintendent, then in 1897 he succeeded David Kirkcaldie as Chief Traffic Manager, then following the death of Kirkcaldie was promoted to Assistant Commissioner for Railways. Harper was Acting Commissioner while T. R. Johnson was on three months' leave from April 1910, then was elevated to the substantive position when Johnson retired in 1914.
