New Silk Road Initiative
The New Silk Road Initiative was a United States initiative in the 2010s that aimed to integrate Afghanistan with Central Asia, boosting trade and economic development. Originally developed by the staff of General David Petraeus at the United States Central Command, it was formally announced by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2011 in a speech in Chennai. However, the initiative never got off the ground. General Jim Mattis cancelled all military funding after Petraeus retired, and the US State Department lacked the funds to implement the projects. The term "New Silk Road" is now commonly used by journalists to refer to China's Belt and Road Initiative. Central Asia
Central Asia is a region of Asia consisting of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The countries as a group are also colloquially referred to as the "-stans" as all have names ending with the Persian language, Persian suffix "-stan" (meaning ) in both respective native languages and most other languages. The Central Asia-South Asia power project, commonly known by the acronym CASA-1000, is a $1.16 billion project currently under construction that will allow for the export of surplus hydroelectricity from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to Afghanistan and Pakistan. Groundbreaking for the project took place in May 2016 by leaders of the four nations. The entire project is expected to be completed by 2025.
