New Cross Rangers
The New Cross Rangers were a motorcycle speedway team which operated from 1934 until their closure in 1953. They also rode as the New Cross Lambs from 1934 to 1935 and then the New Cross Tamers in 1936. The team were List of United Kingdom Speedway League Champions, League Champions in 1938 and 1948. History 1930s In 1933, the new New Cross Stadium was designed by Mr. G. Simpson and built by Robert McAlpine & Sons and cost New Cross Greyhounds Ltd £100,000 to build. A speedway track soon followed in early 1934, with promoter Fred Mockford relocating his Crystal Palace (speedway), Crystal Palace team at the end of the 1933 season. The New Cross club colours were a black Maltese cross on a burnt orange background. The significance of the cross was purely down to the 'Cross' in the team's name. George Newton (speedway Rider)
George William Newton (27 January 1913 in Ash Vale, England – 5 October 1984) was an international speedway rider who featured in the first Speedway World Championship in final in 1936.Bamford, R. & Shailes, G. Bert Roger
Albert Otho Roger (1920–1995) better known as Bert Roger was a speedway rider from England. He earned 11 international caps for the England national speedway team. Speedway career Roger rode in the top tier of British Speedway from 1948 to 1956, riding primarily for New Cross Rangers and West Ham Hammers. He was a leading rider in the early 1950s and finished in the top ten UK averages during the 1952 Speedway National League riding for New Cross. He qualified for the final of the 1952 Individual Speedway World Championship but was unable to take his place due to injury. Dirk Bogarde
Sir Dirk Bogarde (born Derek Jules Gaspard Ulric Niven van den Bogaerde; 28 March 1921 – 8 May 1999) was an English actor, novelist and screenwriter. William Mowbray Longley (11 November 1911 in Dandenong, Victoria – 15 April 2005) was an Australian international speedway rider. Eric French (4 August 1913 – 17 February 1974) was an Irish-born motorcycle speedway rider, in the 1930s and 1940s, and represented the England national speedway team in test matches. He began grasstrack racing in 1935, winning several trophies. While grasstrack racing in 1938 he was spotted by former Wimbledon rider Claude Rye, who arranged for French to try out for the Dons, and he was taken on as a junior. In 1939, he rode in the Wimbledon Dons team at reserve, before his career was interrupted by World War II. 1946 Speedway National League
The 1946 National League was the 12th season of the highest tier of motorcycle speedway in Great Britain and the first post-war season. The league had been abandoned seven years previously due to the outbreak of World War II. Record attendances were attracted with Wembley Lions attracting an average of 50,000 and the league as a whole a total of six and a half million. From the abandoned 1939 season, Southampton Saints and Harringay Tigers were no longer racing whilst Odsal Boomerangs brought National League speedway to Bradford for the first time. Wembley Lions won their second National League title. On 6 July, a crowd of 34,0000 at Odsal Stadium witnessed Odsal Boomerangs lose to Belle Vue Aces. During the match Albert 'Aussie' Rosenfeld, son of Albert Rosenfeld hit the fence and was taken to St Luke's Hospital, Bradford, with a suspected fractured skull.
