New Bedford F.C.
New Bedford Whalers was the name of three American soccer teams based in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The first Whalers played in the Southern New England Soccer League between 1914 and 1918. The second Whalers played in the American Soccer League between 1924 and 1931 before merging into Fall River F.C. The third Whalers were then formed when Fall River merged with New York Yankees. They played in the ASL between 1931 and 1932. New Bedford Whalers I Founded in September 1913, the first Whalers originally played as New Bedford F.C. and played in the Southern New England Soccer League between 1914 and 1918. Immediately after their founding, they entered the 1913–14 National Challenge Cup. They went to the semifinals, falling to eventual champions, Brooklyn Field Club. Sam Mark
Samuel Mark (born Markelevich; September 22, 1896 – August 9, 1980) was an American soccer club owner. During the 1920s and early 1930s he was the owner of Fall River FC, often referred to as the ''Marksmen'', one of the era's most successful teams. Mark's continued to own the team after it relocated and became the New York Yankees and then New Bedford Whalers. He also briefly owned Boston Soccer Club. He had played guard for the Massachusetts American Legion basketball team. Early life Mark was born in Fall River, Massachusetts to Ukrainian Jewish immigrants from Kyiv. His father, Mandel, changed the family surname to Mark in 1916 because of difficulties in spelling and pronouncing it. Mark went to B.M.C. Durfee High School, where he excelled in multiple sports. Statistics of American Soccer League in season 1931. Overview At the start of this season the American Soccer League was in decline, suffering from the effects of the Great Depression. Clubs had begun to fold, merge and disappear. The eventual champions, New Bedford Whalers, had been formed by Sam Mark following the merger of Fall River F.C. and New York Yankees. Long time ASL members Brooklyn Wanderers folded before the season. However New York Americans, later to become a perennial contender in the second ASL, made their debut. The season began on February 29, 1931. The first half ended on May 31, 1931. The second half began September 19, 1931, and the season concluded on December 27, 1931. New York Soccer Club
New York Soccer Club was the name of a New York soccer team that, in 1930, played briefly in the American Soccer League. In 1923, New York fur merchant Maurice Vandeweghe - the father and grandfather of later basketball stars Ernie and Kiki Vandeweghe - bought the Paterson franchise of the ASL and moved the team to the Bronx New York. It played its matches mainly in the Bronx and some major games at the Polo Grounds. Vandeweghe originally renamed the team the New York National Giants, but in 1924, he changed it to New York Giants. Vandewghe initially also owned 75% of the shares of New York Hakoah, which he had to sell due to regulations. Between 1923 and 1930 they had been known as the New York Giants. In 1930 they merged with the Fall River F.C. to become the New York Yankees. Then in 1931 this club absorbed Fall River F.C. and moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts to become the New Bedford Whalers. Fall 1930 American Soccer League

Overview In 1928, a dispute broke out between the American Soccer League and the United States Football Association regarding participation in the National Challenge Cup. The League decided to boycott the cup, but three teams, Bethlehem Steel, the Newark Skeeters and the New York Giants all entered the competition. When the league suspended the three teams, the USFA offered to bankroll the creation of a new league, the Eastern Professional Soccer League. This new league included the three ex-American Soccer League teams, four teams from the Southern New York Football Association and one newly created team, New York Hakoah. By the fall of 1929, the onset of the Great Depression and the competition between the ASL and EPSL had created significant financial problems for both leagues and the USFA.
