Nevado Del Huila
Nevado del Huila (, ) at , is the highest volcano in Colombia, located at the tripoint of the departments of Huila, Tolima and Cauca. It is visible from the city of Cali. The andesitic volcano is located on top of the Ibagué Batholith.Plancha 322, 1999 After being dormant for more than 500 years, the volcano showed heavy signs of activity in 2007 and 2008. As of February 20, 2007, there were more than 7000 "minor" seismic events, and a high state of alert was in place for the departments of Cauca, Huila, Caldas and Valle del Cauca. The volcano erupted twice in April 2007, once in April 2008 and again in November 2008. Ultra Prominent Peak
An ultra-prominent peak, or ultra for short, is a mountain summit with a topographic prominence of or more; it is also called a P1500. The prominence of a peak is the minimum height of climb to the summit on any route from a higher peak, or from sea level if there is no higher peak. There are approximately 1,500 such peaks on Earth. Some well-known peaks, such as the Matterhorn and Eiger, are not ultras because they are connected to higher mountains by high cols and thus do not achieve enough topographic prominence. The term "ultra" originated with earth scientist Steve Fry, from his studies of the prominence of peaks in Washington (state), Washington in the 1980s. Páez River
The Páez River (Río Páez ) is a river in southwestern Colombia. It is a tributary of the Magdalena River which drains into the Caribbean Sea. It flows into the Magdalena just south of the village of Remolino del Vicho. Earthquake On 6 June 1994, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake stuck in the Páez River area causing extensive landsliding and resulting in over 1,100 dead and the displacement of almost the entire population of 15 municipalities in the departments of Cauca and Huila. Six bridges and over of roads were destroyed by the landslides. The Colombian Aerospace Force (FAC, ) is the air force of the Republic of Colombia. Magdalena River
The Magdalena River (, ; less commonly ) is the main river of Colombia, flowing northward about through the western half of the country. It takes its name from the biblical figure Mary Magdalene. It is navigable through much of its lower reaches, in spite of the shifting sand bars at the mouth of its delta, as far as Honda, at the downstream base of its rapids. Armero Tragedy
The Armero tragedy ( ) occurred following the eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz stratovolcano in Tolima Department, Tolima, Colombia, on November 13, 1985. The volcano's eruption after 69 years of dormancy caught nearby towns unprepared, even though volcanological organizations had warned the government to evacuate the area after they detected volcanic activity two months earlier. As pyroclastic flows erupted from the volcanic crater, volcano's crater, they melted the mountain's glaciers, sending four enormous lahars (volcanically induced mudflows, landslides, and debris flows) down its slopes at . The lahars picked up speed in gully, gullies and engulfed the town of Armero, killing more than 20,000 of its almost 29,000 inhabitants.
