State Route 723 (SR 723) is a state highway in Churchill County, Nevada, running through a rural area northwest of Fallon. Route description SR 723 begins at a junction with U.S. Route 50 (US 50) approximately west of downtown Fallon. From there, the highway runs northward along Soda Lake Road, a two-lane road through mostly residential and rural agricultural areas. The highway follows Soda Lake Road due north for about before reaching its terminus at an intersection with Cox Road, on the southeastern flank of the Soda Lakes volcano. Fallon, Nevada
Fallon is a city in Churchill County in the U.S. state of Nevada. The population was 9,327 at time of the 2020 census. Fallon is the county seat of Churchill County and is located in the Lahontan Valley. History The community was first populated during the California Gold Rush, because multiple would-be Forty-niners stopped after crossing the Carson River. The town and post office were established on July 24, 1896, in a little shack belonging to Michael Fallon and Eliza Fallon, who operated a ranch at the site. Shortly afterwards, Jim Richards later operated a store near the post office. The town was officially incorporated in 1908. Churchill County is a county in the western U.S. state of Nevada. As of the 2020 census, the population was 25,516. Its county seat is Fallon. Named for Mexican–American War hero brevet Brigadier General Sylvester Churchill, the county was formed in 1861. Churchill County comprises the Fallon, NV Micropolitan Statistical Area. It is in northwestern Nevada. Churchill County is noteworthy in that it owns and operates the local telephone carrier, Churchill County Communications. Soda Lakes
The Soda Lakes are two lakes located northwest of Fallon, Nevada. They occupy two basaltic maar volcano craters which may have erupted in the last 1500 years. The larger lake, called Soda Lake or Big Soda Lake, is somewhat elongated, stretching in length. The smaller one, Little Soda Lake, is across. Considered to be a single volcano, the combined craters are young enough that future activity can't be ruled out. A geothermal power plant is located on the northeast flank of the volcano. A significant increase in level of Big Soda Lake occurred in the early 20th century due to increased groundwater table. It became a meromictic lake where the deeper water no longer mixes with surface waters. New tufa formations have served as a rare research example of tufa's rate of growth within a century. Soda Lake Geothermal Plant
The Soda Lake Geothermal Field is located on the northeast flank of the Soda Lakes volcano, west of the city of Fallon, Nevada in Churchill County. Exploration of the geothermal site occurred from 1972 to 1986. The Soda Lake I geothermal power plant came online in 1987. The larger Soda Lake II plant started in 1991. Construction of Soda Lake 3 was announced in late 2016. The expansion and upgrades at the combined site are planned to be a total of 37 megawatts. LORAN-C transmitter Fallon was the Master station of the U.S. West Coast LORAN-C Chain ( GRI 9940). It used a transmission power of 400 kW.
