Neu!Reekie!
Neu! Reekie! was an Edinburgh-based literary company and arts production house founded in 2010 by poets Michael Pedersen and Kevin Williamson. They produced over 200 live shows and published poetry anthologies including ''#UntitledOne'' (2015), ''#UntitledTwo'' (2016) and ''#UntitledThree'' (2020). Previous guests to Neu! Reekie! have included Irvine Welsh, Jackie Kay, Young Fathers, Margaret Atwood, Charlotte Church, Hollie McNish, Scott Hutchison, Tom Leonard, Liz Lochhead, Alasdair Gray, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Akala, Sabrina Mahfouz, Bill Drummond, Andrew Weatherall and Hannah Lavery. In 2015, Neu! Reekie! were awarded Creative Edinburgh's City Award for outstanding contributions to Edinburgh's cultural scene. In 2017, Neu! Michael Pedersen (writer)
Michael Pedersen (born 16 June 1984) is a Scottish poet, author and spoken word performer. Alongside his writing, he co-founded the Edinburgh arts collective Neu! Reekie! which existed from 2010 to 2022. He is the current Edinburgh Makar and writer-in-residence at The University of Edinburgh. Career Pedersen started writing in Scots for his Portobello, Edinburgh high school magazine. He studied Law at Durham University (2002–2005) and lived in London for several years before returning to Scotland and turning to writing and publishing full-time. Pedersen published two chapbooks before compiling his first full poetry collection, ''Play with Me'', in 2013. In 2010, Pedersen co-founded with poet Kevin Williamson the Edinburgh collective Neu! Kevin Williamson (writer)
Kevin Williamson (born 1961) is a writer, publisher, and activist originally from Caithness. He is a Scottish socialist and Republicanism, republican and was an activist for the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP). He was also the architect of their radical drug policy, which included the legalisation of cannabis (drug), cannabis and the provision under the NHS Scotland, National Health Service of free synthetic heroin to addicts under medical supervision to combat the problems of drugs in working class communities. He wrote a regular weekly column, "Rebel Ink", for the Scottish Socialist Voice. Publishing career In 1992, Williamson launched a literary magazine called ''Rebel Inc. Hollie McNish
Hollie McNish is a poet and author based between Cambridge and Glasgow. She has published four collections of poetry: ''Papers'' (2012), ''Cherry Pie'' (2015), ''Why I Ride'' (2015), ''Plum'' (2017) and one poetic memoir on politics and parenthood, ''Nobody Told Me'' (2016), of which the Scotsman suggested “The world needs this book...and so does every new parent” and for which she won the Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry. The latter has been translated into German, French and Spanish. McNish's sixth publication - a second cross-genre collection of poetry, memoir and short stories - ''Slug, and other things I've been told to hate,'' was published in May 2021 with Hachette with a further collection ''Lobster,'' was published in hardback in 2024 and as a paperback in 2025, with Fleet / Little Brown. Hannah Lavery
Hannah Lavery is a Scottish poet, playwright and performer. Her poetry and prose has been published by '' Gutter Magazine'', ''The Scotsman'' newspaper, ''404 Ink'', and others. In September 2021 she took on the role of Edinburgh Makar. Work Lavery's poetry pamphlet, ''Finding Seaglass: Poems from The Drift'' was published by Stewed Rhubarb Press in May 2019. She has also been a featured poet at many spoken word and poetry nights including Neu! Reekie!, Sonnet Youth, and festivals including Stanza Poetry Festival and Edinburgh International Book Festival. Lavery was awarded a Megaphone Residency for Artists of Colour by The Workers' Theatre in 2016. Sabrina Mahfouz
Sabrina Mahfouz is a British-Egyptian poet, playwright, performer and writer from South London, England. Her published work includes poetry, plays and contributions to several anthologies. Education Mahfouz earned a BA degree in English Literature and Classics at King's College London and an MA in International Politics and Diplomacy at SOAS, University of London. Career Mahfouz began her career in the Civil Service Fast Stream Programme, working with the Ministry of Defence and other departments. She left the Civil Service to concentrate on creative writing and won a Westminster Prize for New Playwrights in 2010 for her first short play, ''That Boy'', which was performed at the Soho Theatre, London at her young age she has been playing football with bosco. Cushendall
Cushendall (), formerly known as Newtownglens, is a coastal village and townland (of 153 acres) in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.
