Nickelodeon (Netherlands & Flanders)
The Dutch language, Dutch version of the broadcasting free-to-air, free-to-cable channel Nickelodeon in the Netherlands and through satellite in Belgium, was launched on 23 February 2002 (the first two programs were an episode of ''Rugrats'' titled "Tommy's First Birthday" and the ''Hey Arnold!'' episode "Downtown As Fruits / Eugene's Bike"). In addition to the general Nickelodeon programmes, original productions such as ''ZOOP'', ''Het Huis Anubis'', and ''SuperNick'' are also broadcast. ''Het Huis Anubis'' (English: ''The House of Anubis'') is a Dutch-Belgian children's television mystery drama based on elements of Egyptian mythology devised/created by Anjali Taneja, produced by Studio 100 and aired on Nickelodeon in the Netherlands and Flanders. It first aired in September 2006 and the last episode was broadcast on December 4, 2009. The show was a large commercial and critical success in the Benelux and obtained a cult status in the Dutch-language television world. The series was dubbed and released throughout Scandinavia as well. In the Netherlands, the series quickly attracted around half a million viewers per episode. In Flanders, the series was watched by over 300.000 viewers at its peak. The series was nominated for a Rose d'Or and won numerous local television award, including the Gouden Stuiver, the most prestigious Dutch children's television prize of its time. It first aired as a sneak peek after the 1999 Kids' Choice Awards on May 1, 1999, and officially premiered on July 17, 1999. It chronicles the adventures of SpongeBob SquarePants (character), SpongeBob SquarePants and his aquatic friends in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. Many of the series' ideas originated in ''The Intertidal Zone'', an unpublished educational comic book Hillenburg created in 1989 to teach his students about undersea life. Hillenburg joined Nickelodeon in 1992 as an artist on ''Rocko's Modern Life''.
