Sievert Allen Rohwer
Sievert Allen Rohwer (22 December 1887 in Telluride, Colorado, Telluride – 12 February 1951) was an American entomologist who specialized in Hymenoptera. He was a graduate of the University of Colorado. At the time of his death, Rohwer was serving as the Coordinator Defense Activities for the Agricultural Research Administration within the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Rohwer worked for the USDA from 1909 until his death. Rohwer wrote ''Technical papers on miscellaneous forest insects. II. The genotypes of the sawflies or woodwasps, or the superfamily Tenthredinoidea''. Technical series US Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Entomology, Washington, DC 20: 69–109 (1911) and many papers describing new species of Hymenoptera. His collection is held by the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution Washington D. C. His zoological author abbreviations is Rohwer. Sawfly Genera
Sawflies are wasp-like insects that are in the suborder Symphyta within the order Hymenoptera, alongside ants, bees, and wasps. The common name comes from the saw-like appearance of the ovipositor, which the females use to cut into the plants where they lay their eggs. The name is associated especially with the Tenthredinoidea, by far the largest superfamily in the suborder, with about 7,000 known species; in the entire suborder, there are 8,000 described species in more than 800 genera. Symphyta is paraphyletic, consisting of several basal groups within the order Hymenoptera, each one rooted inside the previous group, ending with the Apocrita which are not sawflies. The primary distinction between sawflies and the Apocrita – the ants, bees, and wasps – is that the adults lack a "wasp waist", and instead have a broad connection between the abdomen and the thorax. Some sawflies are Batesian mimics of wasps and bees, and the ovipositor can be mistaken for a stinger. Sawfl ...

Tenthredinoidea
The Tenthredinoidea are the dominant superfamily of sawflies within the Symphyta, containing some 8,400 species worldwide, primarily in the family Tenthredinidae. All known larvae are phytophagous, and a number are considered pests. The included extant families share the distinctive features of a medially narrowed pronotum, paired protibial spurs, and the loss of the transverse mesonotal groove. The superfamily also includes two extinct families. Meicai and Haiyan (1998) identified 66 extant tribes and 17 subfamilies. Taxonomy Families * Argidae Konow, 1890 (58 genera, 897 spp.) * Blasticotomidae Thomson, 1871 (3 genera, 13 spp.) * Cimbicidae W. Kirby, 1837 (16 genera, 182 spp.) * Diprionidae Rohwer, 1910 (11 genera, 136 spp.) * Pergidae Rohwer, 1911 (60 genera, 442 spp.) *Tenthredinidae Tenthredinidae is the largest family of sawflies, with well over 7,500 species worldwide, divided into 430 genera. Larvae are herbivores and typically feed on the foliage of tree ...

Neodiprion Sertifer
''Neodiprion sertifer'', the European pine sawfly or redheaded pine sawfly, is a sawfly species in the genus '' Neodiprion''. Native to Europe, it was accidentally introduced to North America in 1925, where it has established itself as a commercial pest. The larvae of '' Exhyalanthrax afer'' feed on ''N. sertifer'' cocoons. Life cycle The European pine sawfly typically hatches from early April to late May. The larvae feed on existing pine needles. When they mature, they spin into cocoons. In the fall, they leave their cocoons as wasp-like creatures and mate. September and October are when the female lays eggs in pine trees for the next generation. Their favorite trees are Scots pine, red pine, Jack pine, and Japanese pines. Pest The European pine sawfly is a pest as it eats a lot of needles. While this can stunt the growth of the tree, it rarely is enough to kill the tree. For controlling it, one can use natural parasites, remove the eggs from the tree, or spray pes ...
