Nelson Shoemaker
Nelson M. Shoemaker (February 17, 1911 in Grandview, Manitoba – June 10, 2003) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served as a Liberal member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1958 to 1969. The son of Allan Shoemaker and Alice Louetta Harkness, Shoemaker was educated at a one-room school in Grandview, and became a partner of Shoemaker-McGilvray Agencies in Neepawa, working in the fields of insurance, travel and real estate. He later sold the business, which became known as Gill and Schmall Agencies. In 1933, he married Edith E. Ford. He was director of Associated Hospitals of Manitoba from 1955 to 1960, and an alderman in the town of Neepawa from 1956 to 1959. He was easily elected to the Manitoba legislature in the 1958 provincial election for the rural riding of Gladstone, ironically as the Liberals were voted out of office at the provincial level. Grandview is an unincorporated urban community in the Grandview Municipality within the Canadian province of Manitoba that held town status prior to January 1, 2015. James Ferguson (Canadian Politician)
James Robert Ferguson (born August 19, 1925 in Gladstone, Manitoba – February 26, 2013) was a farmer and politician in Manitoba, Canada. He was a Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1969 to 1981 for the riding of Gladstone. The son of Thomas Ferguson and Violet Power, Ferguson received his formal education in the Manitoba school system, and did not attend university. He was active in freemasonry. In 1946, he married June Collins. He operated a farm in the Helston district. He was elected to the Manitoba legislature for the riding of Gladstone in the 1969 election, defeating incumbent Liberal Nelson Shoemaker by 417 votes. The 1969 Manitoba general election was held on June 25, 1969 to elect Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) of the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was a watershed moment in the province's political history. The 1959 Manitoba general election was held on May 14, 1959 to elect 57 members to the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, Canada. It resulted in a majority victory for the incumbent Progressive Conservatives under the leadership of Premier Dufferin Roblin. It was the first time since the 1914 election that the Tories won an outright majority in the province.
