Manizales () is a city in central Colombia. It is the capital of the Department of Caldas, and lies near the Nevado del Ruiz volcano. Currently, the city is the main center for the production of Colombian coffee and an important hub for higher educational institutions. History Manizales was founded on October 12, 1849. The 1994 Tour de France was the 81st edition of the Tour de France, one of cycling's Grand Tour (cycling), Grand Tours. The Tour began on 2 July with a prologue around the French city Lille. After 21 more days of racing, the Tour came to a close on the street of the Champs-Élysées. Twenty-one teams entered the race that was won by Miguel Induráin of the team. Second and third respectively were the Latvian Piotr Ugrumov and the Italian rider, Marco Pantani. Miguel Induráin first captured the lead after the stage 9 individual time trial. The men's individual road race at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, was held on September 27, 1988. There were 136 participants from 54 nations in the race over 196.80 km, with 27 cyclists who did not finish. The maximum number of cyclists per nation was three, down from four in previous editions of the event. The event was won by Olaf Ludwig of East Germany, the first medal for the nation in the men's individual road race (and first victory for any German cyclist). West Germany also earned its first medals in the event, with Bernd Gröne's silver and Christian Henn's bronze. The 1994 Giro d'Italia was the 77th edition of the race. The Giro started off in Bologna on 22 May with a short stage. The race came to a close on 12 June with a flat stage that stretched from Turin to Milan. Seventeen teams entered the race, which was won by Evgeni Berzin of the team. Second and third respectively were the Italian Marco Pantani and the Spanish rider, Miguel Indurain. Berzin first gained the race lead after the fourth stage where he attacked on the final climb to win the day.
