Neko (software)
Neko is a cross-platform open-source animated cursor-chasing cat screenmate application. ''Neko'' () is the Japanese word for ''cat''. About Neko Neko was originally written for the NEC PC-9801. It was later ported as a desk accessory to the Macintosh in 1989 by Kenji Gotoh. He also designed the sleeping graphics for Neko. An X version was later made by Masayuki Koba. In the application, a sprite follows the mouse pointer around. In the System 7 version, the pointer could be modified to various cat toys such as a mouse, fish, or bird. When Neko caught up with the pointer, it would stare at the screen for a few seconds, scratch an itch on its body, yawn, and fall asleep until the pointer was disturbed. In windowed mode, Neko would stop at window boundaries and scratch at the edge of the window. Neko Harbour () is an inlet of the Antarctic Peninsula on Andvord Bay, situated on the west coast of Graham Land. Neko Harbour was discovered by Belgian explorer Adrien de Gerlache during the early 20th century. ''Neko chigura'' (''nekochigura'') or ''Neko tsugura'' (''nekotsugura'') is a kind of cat house made of straw in Japan. It is a folk craft of Sekikawa-mura, Niigata-ken, or Akiyamago (the area of Tsunan-machi, Niigata-ken and Sakae-mura, Nagano-ken). It is called "Nekochigura" in Sekikawa, and "Nekotsugura" in Akiyamago ( ja). ''Chigura'' or ''tsugura'' is written as " 稚座" in kanji, and means bassinet in the Niigata dialect where there is the custom to use rice straw baskets for babies. Neko-dera
is the common name for Buddhism, Buddhist temples in Japan that have strong ties to cats. Many such places are dedicated to the veneration of cats due to the belief they were either saved or cursed by cats in the past. Main "Neko-dera" Shōnen-ji in Kamigyō-ku, Kyoto is commonly known as Neko-dera. According to legend, the third abbot of the temple had a cat who one day disguised itself as a beautiful princess and began to dance despite the financial hardships the abbot faced. After being chased out of the temple, she appeared to him in a dream, informing him that she had successfully persuaded the once-distanced Matsudaira clan, Matsudaira family to financially support the temple again.
