Bell Shakespeare is an Australian theatre company specialising in the works of William Shakespeare, his contemporaries and other classics. Founded by actor John Bell and based in Sydney, it is Australia's only national theatre company. Apart from a program of performances, the company also conducts learning programs. Company history Founded by John Bell in 1990, Bell Shakespeare began as a theatre company dedicated to producing the plays of William Shakespeare in a way that was relevant and exciting to Australian audiences. With the support of an enlightened philanthropist, the late Tony Gilbert AM, and a small number of imaginative corporate and private supporters, Bell Shakespeare was able to mount productions and attract audiences. John Bell (Australian Actor)
John Anthony Bell (born 1 November 1940) is an Australian actor, theatre director and theatre manager. He has been a major influence on the development of Australian theatre in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Early life Bell was born 1 November 1940 in Newcastle, New South Wales, to a bank manager father and elocutionist mother. As the oldest child, he grew up alongside three younger sisters and a brother. At age 9 or 10, he moved with his family to the town of Maitland, New South Wales where he was educated at the Marist Brothers College. At school, he studied Shakespeare, where he developed and performed one-man stage shows. At the age of 15, he developed aspirations to become a Shakespearean actor after seeing Laurence Olivier as Henry V on screen. Anne-Louise Sarks is an Australian theatre director, writer, and actor. She has been the artistic director of the Melbourne Theatre Company since October 2021. Early life and education Anne-Louise Sarks studied acting at the Victorian College of the Arts. Career Sarkse began a professional acting career, appearing in plays for Melbourne Theatre Company, Malthouse Theatre, and Belvoir, before beginning to direct. Adena Jacobs
Adena Jacobs (born June 1982) is an Australian theatre director. She has worked in Australian independent theatre with her company, Fraught Outfit, of which she is artistic director, and has also directed for various mainstage companies. She was "Female Director-in-Residence" at Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne in 2012, and in 2014–15 was Resident Director at Belvoir, Sydney. ''The Lamentable Tragedy of Titus Andronicus'', often shortened to ''Titus Andronicus'', is a Shakespearean tragedy, tragedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1588 and 1593. Zindzi Okenyo (born ) is a television and theatre actress and musician from Sydney. A graduate of the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), she is a presenter on '' Play School'', and performs music professionally under the stage name Okenyo. She is best known for the song "Woman's World", from her debut EP album, ''The Wave''. Career Music In 2013, Okenyo signed to the promotional label Niche Productions, and in 2016 to indie record Label Elefant Traks. Her debut single, "Broken Chest", was released in November 2013. ''The Misanthrope, or the Cantankerous Lover'' (; ) is a 17th-century comedy of manners in verse written by Molière. It was first performed on 4 June 1666 at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal (rue Saint-Honoré), Théâtre du Palais-Royal, Paris by the King's Players. The play satirizes the hypocrisy, hypocrisies of French aristocratic society, but it also engages a more serious tone when pointing out the flaws that afflict all humans. The play differs from other farces of the time by employing Dynamic character#Types of characters, dynamic characters like Alceste and Célimène as opposed to the flat caricatures of traditional social satire.
