Lt. Col. The Hon. Neil McLean (1759 – September 3, 1832) was a judge and political figure in Upper Canada. Biography He was born in Scotland in 1759, descended from the Chiefs of Mingarry Castle on the Isle of Mull, and came to North America as a young man and ensign with the 84th Regiment of Foot (Royal Highland Emigrants) to fight in the American Revolution. After the war he was granted and settled near Cornwall in Upper Canada. As a leading Presbyterian and a Highland gentleman and officer, McLean was a pre-eminent figure in the local community. He served as sheriff in the Eastern District and, in 1788, was named judge in the surrogate court. He served in the Stormont militia during the War of 1812, becoming colonel. In 1815, he was appointed to the Legislative Council of Upper Canada but he never attended. He helped found the Highland Society of Canada in 1818. He died in St. Andrews in 1832. Lieutenant-Colonel Neil Loudon Desmond McLean, DSO** (28 November 1918 – 17 November 1986), known as Billy McLean, was a Scottish politician and intelligence officer in the British Army. During World War II, he worked for the Special Operations Executive and was involved in clandestine missions in Ethiopia, China, and particularly Albania. In 1954 he served as a Unionist Member of Parliament for Inverness. Family and education McLean was born in Sutherland, the elder son of Neil Gillean McLean, who had made a great deal of money trading with India and owned an estate at Glencalvie. The family called him "Billy". Neil McLean is an American saxophonist now residing in Tyler, Texas. As a member of the Henry Kimbrell Group, Ray Reach and Friends, the SuperJazz Big Band and the Magic City Jazz Orchestra, he worked with numerous notable performers, including Dionne Warwick, Ella Fitzgerald, Ernie Watts, Lou Marini, Ellis Marsalis and many others. For many years, while residing in Birmingham, Alabama, Neil established himself as one of the premier saxophonists in the Southeast. His arrangements for the SuperJazz Big Band are among the finest performed by that venerable ensemble. McLean was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame in 1983. Allan Neil MacLean (24 November 1944 – 17 November 2022) was a New Zealand District Court judge and that country's first chief coroner, from 2007 to 2015. He was the coroner during the Pike River Mine disaster and the Christchurch earthquakes. Early life and family Born on 24 November 1944, MacLean was the son of Donald Iain Neil MacLean, a solicitor and later magistrate, and Marjorie Parker MacLean (née Butcher). He was educated at Christchurch Boys' High School, and went on to study at the University of Canterbury, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1967. In 1969, he married Susan Gordon Eliott, and the couple went on to have three children. Career After completing a period of compulsory military training, MacLean worked at his father's law firm. Between 1972 and 1993, he was a partner in three different Christchurch legal practices. He was appointed as a coroner in 1978.
