Neil J. Gillis
Neil Joseph Gillis (December 8, 1869 – March 15, 1939) was a merchant, insurance broker and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Cape Breton County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1900 to 1911 as a Liberal member. Biography He was born in Victoria County, Nova Scotia, the son of Hugh Gillis and Mary MacDonald. In 1891, he married Jennie McKinnon. Gillis was a Grand Master in the provincial Workmen's Association. He was named to the Legislative Council of Nova Scotia in 1916 and served until it was abolished in May 1928. Gillis served as a member of the Canadian Farm Loans Board until 1933 and then was a member of the Nova Scotia Land Settlement Board from 1933 to 1939. The Nova Scotia Liberal Party (officially the Liberal Association of Nova Scotia) is a centrist provincial political party in Nova Scotia, Canada and the provincial section of the Liberal Party of Canada. Victoria County is an historical county and census division of Nova Scotia, Canada. Local government is provided by the Municipality of the County of Victoria and the Wagmatcook 1 reserve. History Named after Queen Victoria, it was established by statute in 1851. Cape Breton County was divided into two separate counties in that year, with the northern portion becoming Victoria County. Like other parts of Nova Scotia, the county was sparsely inhabited by the Miꞌkmaq, who hunted in the area. The earliest settlers of Victoria County were almost exclusively Loyalists, with most arriving from the United States in the years following the American Revolutionary War. The Legislative Council of Nova Scotia was the upper house of the legislature of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. It existed from 1838 to May 31, 1928. From the establishment of responsible government in 1848, members were appointed by the lieutenant governor of Nova Scotia on the advice of the Premier of Nova Scotia, premier. Glace Bay (Scottish Gaelic: ''Glasbaidh'') is a community in the eastern part of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality in Nova Scotia, Canada. It forms part of the general area referred to as Industrial Cape Breton. Formerly an incorporated town (1901–1995), the municipal government in Glace Bay was dissolved and the community was amalgamated into the larger regional municipality.
