At the same time, Peste Noire bandleader Famine was also the lead guitarist on the first Alcest demo, ''Tristesse hivernale''. Kodama (album)
''Kodama'' (Japanese for "tree spirit" or "echo") is the fifth studio album by French post-black metal band Alcest. It was released on September 30, 2016 via Prophecy Productions. It is a concept album about "the confrontation of the natural world and the human world", inspired by Hayao Miyazaki's film ''Princess Mononoke.'' Musically the album is a return to the band's earlier blackgaze style, due to Neige's feeling that he "needed to go for something more punchy, darker, and more personal." ''Kodama'' is also the first Alcest album to feature bassist Indria Saray, though he has performed live with the band since 2010. Production and recording According to Neige, the band spent "many months" in the studio recording the album, from January to April 2016. The drums were first recorded in the band's own rehearsal space to an old tape recorded, "using only the natural reverb of the big attic room there, to give the sensation of a real, vast space." Having finished recording the drum ...

Shelter (Alcest Album)
''Shelter'' is the fourth studio album by French post-black metal band Alcest. It was released on 17 January 2014 via Prophecy Productions. The album's title is related to its overall concept of shelter, "a safe place to escape, this secret thing we all have when life is going too fast and you are full of anxiety." ''Shelter'' marks a significant stylistic shift for the band, fully embracing the band's shoegaze and dream pop influences while departing from their previous black metal influences, with ''Rolling Stone'' writing that the album has "more in common genetically with Sigur Rós than Satyricon." Musical style, recording and writing ''Shelter''s style sees the band delving deeper into their shoegaze influences and "leaving metal behind" entirely. ''Rolling Stone'' compared the album to "If the Cocteau Twins discovered a long-lost triplet who had slugged it out in space-pop groups and post-rock bands", comparing the style to Slowdive, Mogwai, and Sigur Rós. According to Al ...

Les Voyages De L'âme
''Les Voyages de l'âme'' () is the third studio album by French blackgaze band Alcest, released on January 6, 2012, by Prophecy Productions. An edited version of the song "Autre temps" was released as a single alongside an accompanying music video. The album was described as a musical synthesis of the previous two albums, blending shoegaze, post-rock, and black metal influences. Writing and musical style ''The New York Times'' described the album's sound as "a kind of slow, pretty, gauzy metal, with highly managed guitar distortion, cathedral reverb and high, clear voices, except for when Neige sings in a barbed scream." AllMusic's Thom Jurek described the album as combining "black metal's buzz, gorgeous shoegaze melodies, ambient soundscapes, and post rock feedback", and as a synthesis of the styles of the previous two albums. He also notes that the aggressive elements are employed in a "celebratory manner", and that with the use of harsh, screamed vocals, "the melodic beauty of ...

Tristesse Hivernale
''Tristesse hivernale'' (English: "Wintry Sadness") is a demo and release debut of French band Alcest, released in 2001 on Drakkar Productions. It is their only release with guitarist Aegnor and bass guitarist Argoth, both from Peste Noire (in which Aegnor later changed his alias to Famine), as the band's creator, Neige, would continue Alcest as a one-man project after the release. It remains the band's only release as a trio. Unlike the following albums which would be influenced by shoegaze and post-metal, ''Tristesse hivernale'' is oriented towards traditional black metal with a raw sound and harsh vocals. It was later re-released by Northern Silence Productions in August 2007 as a split release with another French black metal band, Angmar, under the name ''Aux funérailles du monde... / Tristesse hivernale''. Les Discrets
Les Discrets is a French post-rock project created and led by Fursy Teyssier as a "platform gathering music and art." Teyssier was the sole member of the band until 2009, when he was joined by Audrey Hadorn and Winterhalter. Les Discrets released ''Septembre et Ses Dernières Pensées'' in March 2010, '' Ariettes oubliées...'' in February 2012. Winterhalter left the band in 2013 to focus on his duties for Alcest. The band's third album '' Prédateurs'', was released in April 2017, which saw a transition towards an indie rock and trip hop-oriented sound. The band considers its name to mean "Those who keep silent", although "The Discreet Ones" would be more an accurate translation. History Les Discrets was formed in 2003 as a musical side-project alongside Fursy's other band Phest. Fursy, who is also an illustrator and film director, wanted to express concepts in music similar to those found within his art. Fellow French musicians, Winterhalter and Audrey Hadorn, soon joined the ...
