Nedre Eiker was a municipality in Buskerud county, Norway. It is part of the traditional region of Eiker. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Mjøndalen. The old municipality of Eiker was divided into ''Nedre Eiker'' (lower Eiker) and ''Øvre Eiker'' (upper) on 1 July 1885. General information Name The Old Norse form of the name was ''Eikjar''. The name is the plural form of ''eiki'' which means "oak wood". The meaning of ''Nedre Eiker'' is "(the) lower (part of) Eiker". (The municipality of Eiker was divided in 1885.) Coat-of-arms The coat-of-arms was granted on 26 June 1970. The arms show three gold-colored oak leaves on a red background. The arms are canting because the meaning of the name (Eik) comes from the word for oak. Geography The municipality is located in the southern part of Buskerud county. Eiker is a traditional district in the county of Buskerud, Norway. History Eiker consists of the municipalities of Nedre Eiker and Øvre Eiker. The area is located in the southern part of Buskerud county. Eiker is an agricultural area with a long history. The area was first inhabited around 8000 BC. During the early Viking Age, Eiker was the western extension of the kingdom of Vingulmark. Somewhat later, it became part of the kingdom of Vestfold. Lars Korvald
(29 April 1916 – 4 July 2006) was a Norwegian politician and educator who served as the prime minister of Norway from 1972 to 1973. He became associated with the Christian Democratic Party and was elected to the Norwegian Parliament. As prime minister he led the cabinet that took over when Trygve Bratteli resigned in the wake of the first referendum over Norway's membership in the European Economic Community. Early life and career Lars Korvald was born at Nedre Eiker in Buskerud, Norway. His parents were Engebret Korvald (1873-1956) and Karen Sofie Wigen (1876-1965). He attended Hamar Cathedral School graduating in 1940. He attended the Norwegian College of Agriculture at Ås in Akershus where he graduated in 1943. Drammensfjord
Drammensfjord () is a fjord in along the border of Akershus and Buskerud counties in Norway that connects to Ytre Oslofjord on the west side. It stretches about to the north and northeast. The Drammenselva river discharges into the head of the fjord. The fjord shares its name with the city of Drammen, which is located at the head of the fjord. Drammen Municipality is located on its west and north sides. The land on the east side of the fjord is called ''Hurumhalvøya'' or the Hurum peninsula and this is located in Asker Municipality. The peninsula lies between the Drammensfjord and the Oslofjord. The fjord narrows to a strait at Svelvik on the west side and Verket in Asker on the east side. Tyrifjorden
Tyrifjorden (Lake Tyri) is a lake in Norway. It lies northwest of Oslo and is the nation's fifth largest lake with an area of 138.56 km2. It has a volume of 13 km3, is 295 meters deep at its deepest, and lies 63 meters above sea level. Solbergelva is a village in Drammen Municipalities of Norway, municipality in Buskerud, Norway. The village lies north of Drammenselva, approx. 5 miles west of Bragernes square, between Åssiden in the east and Krokstadelva in the west with Solbergfjellet north.
