Neal Tooley
Neal Tooley (June 24, 1935 – February 27, 2021) was an American driver of modified and supermodified race cars. For many years he held the lap record at Trenton Speedway in New Jersey. Racing career Neal Tooley began racing a former Don June stock car in 1958, but did not win his first of 28 career features at the Watertown Speedway, New York, until late into the 1962 season. Tooley won the track championship in 1964, and then in 1966 he transitioned to supermodified cars racing primarily at Oswego Speedway, New York. By 1971 Tooley had returned primarily to modified racing, and went on to compete successfully at venues on both the Canadian and American sides of the St. Lawrence River, including the Capital City Speedway in Ottawa, Ontario, and in New York at Can-Am Speedway in LaFargeville, Fulton Speedway, Evans Mills Speedway, and Spencer Speedway in Williamson. LeRay, New York
Le Ray is a town in Jefferson County, New York, United States. The population was 25,574 at the 2020 census, up from 21,782 in 2010. The town is named for Jacques-Donatien Le Ray, known as a French "father of the American Revolution". The town is in the central part of the county and is northeast of Watertown. History Archaeological remains show the presence of aboriginal natives in the town. The region was part of Macomb's Purchase and was acquired by Gouverneur Morris and James Le Ray in 1800. Settlement began around 1802. The town was formed in 1806 from the town of Brownville and included a large portion of northern Jefferson County. Parts of the town were used to create the towns of Wilna, Alexandria, Theresa, Antwerp, and Philadelphia. Can-Am Speedway
Can-Am Speedway is a half-mile dirt oval raceway located in La Fargeville, Town of Orleans, New York. Located just a few miles from the Thousand Islands on New York State Route 411, it draws competitors and fans from both sides of the Canada–United States border. Overview The Can-Am Speedway was built in 1974 by an Evans Mills, New York real estate broker, Leslie W. Brown. The track lasted one year under this ownership and Brown filed for bankruptcy. Early in 1975, a group of Watertown Speedway investors purchased the track, that consisted of Bob Thurston Sr., Douglas Atkinson, and Thomas Coughlin. This partnership lasted for several seasons. Syracuse Mile
The Syracuse Mile was a dirt oval raceway located at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, New York. Originally built for harness racing in 1826, the first auto race was run in 1903, making it the second-oldest auto racing facility in United States history. The racetrack was also nicknamed "The Moody Mile" after driver Wes Moody turned a 100-mile-per-hour lap in 1970. The track and grandstands were torn down in 2016 by state government officials with the plan to modernize facilities. Spencer Speedway
Spencer Speedway is a flat asphalt oval located in Williamson, New York. The complex also includes a quarter-mile dragway. Overview Spencer Speedway was built by brothers Del, Walt and Merle Spencer, and opened in August 1955. The brothers operated the facility until 1993 when it was sold to Todd Hartman and rebranded the Apple Valley Speedway. Due to financial issues, Hartman transferred the property to his brother-in-law, Jeffrey Tome, but by 1996 the Spencer brothers resumed control. It was purchased by John White in 2005, who also owned the Chemung Speedrome. Since 2018 the facility has been managed by Joe Scotnicki's Race of Champions organization. Fulton Speedway
Fulton Speedway is a 3/8th mile high bank Dirt track racing, dirt Oval racing, oval Stock car racing, raceway in Fulton, Oswego County, New York, Volney, New York (state), New York. The track was built into a hilly area on the banks of the Oswego River in a natural bowl, with seating high above the track, on a hill. Capital City Speedway was a racetrack in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, located southwest of Stittsville, Ontario. The Speedway included a dragstrip and a 3/8th mile oval, and ran five different series including the 4 For Fun class, Mini Stock Class, Thunder Car Class, ACT Late Model Class and the Lentch Automotive Legends Class. Evans Mills is a village in Jefferson County, New York, United States. The population was 621 at the 2010 census. The village is within the town of Le Ray and is northeast of Watertown.
