Nazi Exploitation Films
Nazi exploitation (also Nazisploitation) is a subgenre of exploitation film and sexploitation film that involves Nazis committing sex crimes, often as camp or prison overseers during World War II. Most follow the women in prison formula, only relocated to a concentration camp, an extermination camp, or Nazi brothel, and with an added emphasis on sadism, gore, and degradation. The most infamous and influential title (which set the standards of the genre) is a Canadian production, ''Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS'' (1974). Its surprise success and that of ''Salon Kitty'' and ''The Night Porter'' led European filmmakers, mostly in Italy, to produce similar films, with just over a dozen being released over the next few years. Globally exported to both cinema and VHS, the films were critically attacked and heavily censored, and the sub-genre all but vanished by the end of the 1970s. ''Germany, Year Zero'' () is a 1948 film directed by Roberto Rossellini, and is the final film in Rossellini's unofficial war film trilogy, following ''Rome, Open City'' and '' Paisà''. ''Germany Year Zero'' takes place in Allied-occupied Germany, unlike the others, which take place in German-occupied Rome and during the Allied invasion of Italy, respectively. As in many neorealist films, Rossellini used mainly local, non-professional actors. Roberto Gastone Zeffiro Rossellini (8 May 1906 – 3 June 1977) was an Italian film director, screenwriter and producer. He was one of the most prominent directors of the Italian neorealist cinema, contributing to the movement with films such as ''Rome, Open City'' (1945), '' Paisan'' (1946), and '' Germany, Year Zero'' (1948). Plot Conrad von Starke is driving down a road, listening to a war crimes trial on the radio. He stops the car and exits at the ruins of an old death camp. There, he meets Lise Cohen. It is revealed that Lise is a former prisoner of the camp and that the man, Conrad, is the former Commandant who has arranged to meet her several years after the end of World War II. Cesare Canevari (13 October 1927 – 25 October 2012) was an Italian actor, director and screenwriter. Life and career Born in Milan, Canevari began his career shortly after World War II as a stage actor, occasionally also appearing in films in minor roles.
