Navigation Authority
A navigation authority is a company or statutory body which is concerned with the management of a navigable canal or river. Rights of a navigation authority Whilst the rights of individual authorities vary, a navigation authority will typically have a right to: *Implement a registration or licensing scheme for boats on waterways under their control *Levy a licence fee, tolls or both on vessels using the waterway *Lay down rules regarding the manner in which vessels shall be navigated. Responsibilities of a navigation authority Again, responsibilities vary, but will usually include: *Maintaining Lock (water transport), locks and other structures *Dredging the channel *Flood control Ownership of the waterway Whilst a navigation authority may own the land over which the waterway runs, and usually does in the case of artificial waterways, this is not invariably the case, and particularly in the case of river navigations, the land beneath the river may belong to riparian landowners. Canal
Canals or artificial waterways are waterways or engineered channels built for drainage management (e.g. flood control and irrigation) or for conveyancing water transport vehicles (e.g. water taxi). They carry free, calm surface flow under atmospheric pressure, and can be thought of as artificial rivers. In most cases, a canal has a series of dams and locks that create reservoirs of low speed current flow. These reservoirs are referred to as ''slack water levels'', often just called ''levels''. A canal can be called a navigation canal when it parallels a natural river and shares part of the latter's discharges and drainage basin, and leverages its resources by building dams and locks to increase and lengthen its stretches of slack water levels while staying in its valley. A canal can cut across a drainage divide atop a ridge, generally requiring an external water source above the highest elevation. The best-known example of such a canal is the Panama Can ... Marine Navigation
Marine navigation is the art and science of steering a ship from a starting point (sailing) to a destination, efficiently and responsibly. It is an art because of the skill that the navigator must have to avoid the dangers of navigation, and it is a science because it is based on physics, physical, mathematical, oceanographic, cartographic, astronomical, and other knowledge. Marine navigation can be surface or Submarine navigation, submarine. Etymology Navigation (from the Latin word ''navigatio'') is the act of sailing or voyaging. Nautical (from Latin ''nautĭca'', and this from Greek language, Greek ναυτική [τέχνη] ''nautikḗ [téjne]'' "[art of] sailing" and from ναύτης ''nautes'' "sailor") is that pertaining to navigation and the science and art of sailing. Naval (from the Latin adjective ''navalis'') is that relating to ships and navigation, or particularly to the navy. In Ancient Rome, the ''navicularii'' conducted long-distance trade by sea. Because of the strong opposition of local authorities, he had to stop the production of the documentary in 2005 and continue it after four years. Rajabian became interested in the subject of the movie while he was on one of his photographing tours in the northern mountains of Semnan Province. Synopsis The movie is about a group of children between eight and twelve years of age who had not left their village before the production of the work in 2005. Navigation Research
In cognitive psychology, spatial cognition is the acquisition, organization, utilization, and revision of knowledge about spatial environments. It is most about how animals, including humans, behave within space and the knowledge they built around it, rather than space itself. These capabilities enable individuals to manage basic and high-level cognitive tasks in everyday life. Numerous disciplines (such as cognitive psychology, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, geographic information science, cartography, etc.) work together to understand spatial cognition in different species, especially in humans. Thereby, spatial cognition studies also have helped to link cognitive psychology and neuroscience. Scientists in both fields work together to figure out what role spatial cognition plays in the brain as well as to determine the surrounding neurobiological infrastructure. In humans, spatial cognition is closely related to how people talk about their environment, find their way in ... Navigability
A body of water, such as a river, canal or lake, is navigable if it is deep, wide and calm enough for a water vessel (e.g. boats) to pass safely. Navigability is also referred to in the broader context of a body of water having sufficient under keel clearance for a vessel. Such a navigable water is called a ''waterway'', and is preferably with few obstructions against direct traverse that need avoiding, such as rocks, reefs or trees. Bridges built over waterways must have sufficient clearance. High flow speed may make a channel unnavigable due to risk of ship collisions. Waters may be unnavigable because of ice, particularly in winter or high-latitude regions. Navigability also depends on context: a small river may be navigable by smaller craft such as a motorboat or a kayak, but unnavigable by a larger cargo ship, freighter or cruise ship. Shallow rivers may be made navigable by the installation of locks that regulate flow and increase upstream water level, or by dredgi ... Navigation (journal)
''Navigation'' is an open access academic journal about navigation published by the Institute of Navigation in cooperation with HighWire Press. Its editor-in-chief is Richard B. Langley; its 2021 impact factor is 2.1. The Journal Citation Reports categorizes the journal under aerospace engineering, remote sensing, and telecommunications. The journal publishes original, peer-reviewed papers in an open access (OA) environment on all areas related to the art, science, and engineering of positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) covering land (including indoor use), sea, air, and space applications. PNT technologies of interest encompass navigation satellite systems (both global and regional); inertial navigation, electro-optical systems including LiDAR Lidar (, also LIDAR, an acronym of "light detection and ranging" or "laser imaging, detection, and ranging") is a method for determining ranging, ranges by targeting an object or a surface with a laser and measuring the time for th ... Navigation
Navigation is a field of study that focuses on the process of monitoring and controlling the motion, movement of a craft or vehicle from one place to another.Bowditch, 2003:799. The field of navigation includes four general categories: land navigation, marine navigation, air navigation, aeronautic navigation, and space navigation. It is also the term of art used for the specialized knowledge used by navigators to perform navigation tasks. All navigational techniques involve locating the navigator's Position (geometry), position compared to known locations or patterns. Navigation, in a broader sense, can refer to any skill or study that involves the determination of position and Relative direction, direction. In this sense, navigation includes orienteering and pedestrian navigation. For marine navigation, this involves the safe movement of ships, boats and other nautical craft either on or underneath the water using positions from navigation equipment with appropriate nautical char ... Maid Of Orleans (The Waltz Joan Of Arc)
"Joan of Arc (Maid of Orleans)" is a song by English electronic band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), released in 1982 as the third single from their third studio album, ''Architecture & Morality''. To prevent confusion with the group's previous single "Joan of Arc", the song was retitled "Maid of Orleans (The Waltz Joan of Arc)" for its single release. Both songs are about the French heroine Joan of Arc and both reached the Top 5 of the UK Singles Chart—although this release was more successful internationally, topping the charts in several countries including Germany, where it was the biggest-selling single of 1982. "Maid of Orleans" has sold four million copies worldwide. The single was the last release on the Dindisc label. Background "Maid of Orleans" had originally been written by Andy McCluskey on 30 May 1981, the 550th anniversary of Joan of Arc's death. The track has been described by McCluskey as OMD's "Mull of Kintyre".Stanley, BobHow to lose 3 million fan ...
