Navaly
Navaly ( ta, நவாலி ; si, නවලි), also transliterated as Navali, Navaaly or Navaali is a town in the Jaffna District of Sri Lanka and it is located about 6 km from Jaffna, in the northwest of the peninsula of the same name. There are many famous places in the town, for example: Navaly kalaiyoodai amman koovil, St. Peter's Church. Nearly 1500 people live there. On 9 July 1995, during the Sri Lankan Civil War, the village church was bombed by the Sri Lankan Air Force. Navaly Church Bombing
The Navaly Church bombing was the 1995 bombing of the Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Navaly (or Navali) in the Jaffna Peninsula by the Sri Lankan Air Force during the Sri Lankan Civil War. It is estimated that at least 147 civilians, who had taken refuge from the fighting inside the church, died as a result of this incident. Idikundu
Idikundu (Idi-kun-du), translates in Tamil to 'Thunder Well', is a natural water well in Navaly, Jaffna District, Sri Lanka. Legend says it was created by a lightning strike in the early 20th century; some speculate it might be an asteroid that struck. The depth of this water well is so deep and it is unknown; it is also an unpopular location as some locals use this well to commit suicide. In Sri Lanka, provinces ( si, පළාත, translit=Paḷāta; ta, மாகாணம், translit=Mākāṇam) are the first level administrative division. They were first established by the British rulers of Ceylon in 1833. Over the next century most of the administrative functions were transferred to the districts, the second level administrative division. By the middle of the 20th century the provinces had become merely ceremonial. Northern Province, Sri Lanka
The Northern Province ( ta, வட மாகாணம் ''Vaṭa Mākāṇam''; si, උතුරු පළාත ''Uturu Paḷāta'') is one of the nine provinces of Sri Lanka, the first level administrative division of the country. The provinces have existed since the 19th century but did not have any legal status until 1987 when the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka established provincial councils. Between 1988 and 2006 the province was temporarily merged with the Eastern Province to form the North Eastern Province. The capital of the province is Jaffna. Jaffna
Jaffna (, ) is the capital city of the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. It is the administrative headquarters of the Jaffna District located on a peninsula of the same name. With a population of 88,138 in 2012, Jaffna is Sri Lanka's 12th most populous city. Jaffna is approximately from Kandarodai which served as an emporium in the Jaffna peninsula from classical antiquity. Jaffna's suburb Nallur served as the capital of the four-century-long medieval Jaffna Kingdom. Prior to the Sri Lankan Civil War, it was Sri Lanka's second most populous city after Colombo.
