Naval Base Commander, Clyde
The Naval Base Commander, Clyde also known as the Commodore, Clyde Submarine Base is a senior British Royal Navy appointment first established in August 1967. The office holder is responsible for the command and administration of His Majesty's Naval Base Clyde. The current incumbent is Commodore Donald Doull. History The office was first created August 1967 with Commodore Derrick G. Kent being the first incumbent appointed. The post holder reported to the Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff (Support) from December 2011 to January 2018. Commodore (Royal Navy)
Commodore (Cdre) is a rank of the Royal Navy above captain and below rear admiral. It has a NATO ranking code of OF-6. The rank is equivalent to brigadier in the British Army and Royal Marines and to air commodore in the Royal Air Force. Commodore has only been a substantive rank in the Royal Navy since 1997. Until then the term denoted a functional position rather than a formal rank, being the title bestowed on the senior officer of a fleet of at least two naval vessels comprising an independent (usually ad hoc and short-term) command. (In this case, for instance, a lieutenant in substantive rank could be a commodore for the term of the command.) Rear Admiral Christopher John Hockley, (born 24 August 1959) is a retired Royal Navy officer who was Flag Officer Scotland, Northern England and Northern Ireland from September 2011 to November 2014. Carolyn Stait
Commodore Carolyn Jane Stait, (born 14 April 1957) is a retired senior officer of the Royal Navy. From 2004 to 2007, she was the first woman to command a Naval Base in Britain. As Commander of HMNB Clyde in Scotland, the home of the UK's nuclear deterrent at the Faslane Naval Base, Stait was the first woman to be selectively promoted to the rank of commodore in direct competition with male officers: with the exception of Princess Anne, who was made appointed the rank of admiral and Chief Commandant for Women in the Royal Navy in 2012, no woman held a higher rank in the Royal Navy until 2015.
