The Battle of Sansapor (Operation Globetrotter) was an amphibious landing and subsequent operations around Sansapor, Dutch New Guinea on the Vogelkop Peninsula during World War II. Cape Opmarai Airfield
Cape Opmarai Airfield is a disused airfield located near Sansapor, in Southwest Papua, Indonesia. It is abandoned and overgrown, disused since 1944. History The airfield was used during the Sansapor-Cape Opmarai Operation, 30 July-31 August 1944 in northern Dutch New Guinea. On 30 July, a task force comprising elements of the United States Army 6th Division made simultaneous and unopposed landings near Cape Opmarai on the mainland, and on Middelburg and Amsterdam Islands to the northwest. Only a few enemy stragglers were encountered. The next day a shore-to shore landing from Cape Opmarai was carried out at Sansapor. As in other New Guinea areas, airdrome construction proceeded rapidly. Middleburg Airfield
Middleburg Airfield (also known as Klenso Airfield or Toem Airfield) is a World War II airfield located on Middleburg Island, to the north of Sansapor in Southwest Papua, Indonesia. The airfield was abandoned after the war and today is almost totally returned to its natural state. History The airfield was built by the Americans, and began as a 5,400 foot-long fighter airstrip, becoming operational on 17 August 1944. A second runway, completed on 3 September, began at 6,000 feet but was soon lengthened to 7,500. It was used by a number of units, including the 419th Night Fighter Squadron flying P-61 Black Widows (21 August to 6 March 1945) and the 67th Fighter Squadron of the 347th Fighter Group flying P-38 Lightnings (15 August to 12 February 1945). Sansapor Airfield (also known as Mar Airfield) is a former World War II airfield located in the village of Werur, in Tambrauw Regency, Southwest Papua, Indonesia. The airfield was abandoned after the war and has almost been reclaimed by nature. Since 2014 the field is being rebuild to airport status. Manokwari is a coastal town and the capital city, capital of the Provinces of Indonesia, Indonesian province of West Papua (province), West Papua. 63rd Infantry Regiment (United States)
The 63rd Infantry Regiment was a Regular infantry regiment in the United States Army. Lineage The regiment was constituted on 15 May 1917 in the Regular Army as the 63rd Infantry. It was organized on 1 June 1917 at the Presidio of San Francisco, California, from personnel of the 12th Infantry Regiment, and was assigned to the 11th Division on 5 July 1918. After the armistice, it was relieved from the 11th Division on 29 November 1918. The regiment was stationed at Madison Barracks, New York, as of June 1919 as a separate regiment. Concurrently, the 2nd Battalion was transferred to Fort Ontario, New York, and the 3rd Battalion was transferred to Plattsburg Barracks, New York, The entire regiment was transferred in September 1921 to Plattsburg Barracks.
