Natural disasters in China are the result of several different natural hazards that affect the country according to its particular geographic and geologic features affecting both humans and animals. Perception of disasters Natural disasters reveal the traditional view of disasters as divine retribution: ''tian zai'' (天災), literally 'heavenly disaster'. In ancient beliefs, natural disasters were seen as Heaven's response to immoral human behaviour, whereby the conduct of different individuals carried different weights. While the behaviour of common people ranked last, the actions of bureaucrats had a greater effect. Given that in Imperial China the emperor's behaviour was believed to be the most important, popular belief was that the emperor should attempt to prevent disasters by ensuring his conduct was in following with moral codes – and if a disaster should occur, he was responsible for addressing the consequences. 2011 China Floods
The 2011 China floods were a series of floods from June to September 2011 that occurred in central and southern parts of the People's Republic of China. They were caused by heavy rain that inundated portions of 12 provinces, leaving other provinces still suffering a prolonged drought, and with direct economic losses of nearly US$6.5 billion. Effects Conflicting reports suggested that either 12 or 13 provinces and autonomous regions had been hit by heavy floods. Weather forecasts predicted the rain would continue, and the government warned of possible mudslides. On 10 June 2011, China's Flood Control Office reported that the tropical storm Sarika would land somewhere between the city of Shanwei in Guangdong province and Zhangpu in nearby Fujian province on 11 June, bringing more severe flooding. Satellite
A satellite or an artificial satellite is an object, typically a spacecraft, placed into orbit around a celestial body. 2024 Guangdong Floods
In April 2024, heavy rains caused floods in China, mainly affecting Guangdong Province. In Guangdong Province, at least four deaths were confirmed, while 10 people were missing. As many as 110,000 people were evacuated. Tens of millions of people were reported affected. 2023 China Floods
Several floods struck China starting in July 2023, most of them caused by heavy rainfalls in different areas. The most notable floods were the 2023 Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Heavy rain and Northeast china heavy rain, which left at least 81 dead and 34 missing. In August 2022, flash floods hit Datong Hui and Tu Autonomous County. At least 16 people have been killed and 36 others are missing in Qinghai Province. 2021 China Floods
Several floods struck China starting in June 2021, most of them caused by heavy rainfalls in different areas. According to the World Meteorological Organization, such heavy rains are frequently a result of climate change. The most notable floods were the 2021 Henan floods, which left 398 dead or missing. Heilongjiang Since mid-June, water levels of Heilongjiang and Nenjiang rivers had been rising. Heilongjiang river, also known as the Amur across the border in Russia, also flooded Russia's Amur Oblast. As of 26 June, over 19,000 people had evacuated and 42,000 people were affected by the flooding in Daxinganling, Heihe and Mudanjiang. Thousands of hectares of crops were damaged. 2020 China Floods
In early June 2020, heavy rains caused by the regional rainy season led to floods severely affecting large areas of southern China including the Yangtze basin and its tributaries. Rains and floods extended to central and eastern China during July and were described as the worst since at least 1998. According to the Ministry of Emergency Management, by the end of June flooding had displaced 744,000 people across 26 provinces with 81 people missing or dead. As of 13 August, the floods have affected 63.46 million people and caused a direct economic loss of 178.96 billion CNY, which are 12.7% and 15.5% higher than the 2015-2019 average, respectively. 219 people were found dead or are missing, and 54,000 houses collapsed, which is 54.8% and 65.3% lower than the 2015-2019 average, respectively. 2017 China Floods
The 2017 China floods began in early June 2017. More than 14.9017 million people in 10 provinces and municipalities and regions were affected, especially the southern and central provinces and regions of Guangxi, Guangdong, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Shandong, Shaanxi, Yunnan, Sichuan, Gansu and Henan.
