Native American Affairs Liaison
The Native American Affairs Liaison is a position in the executive branch of Oklahoma government responsible for representing federally recognized tribes in the state within the executive branch. The position replaced the Oklahoma Indian Affairs Commission in 2011. The current Native American Affairs Liaison is Wes Nofire. Background In 2011, the Oklahoma Indian Affairs Commission was replaced by the Native American Affairs Liaison. While the Oklahoma Legislature was debating the creation of the position there was disagreement over whether to create a Native American Affairs Liaison appointed by the Governor of Oklahoma or to create a permanent Oklahoma Secretary of Native American Affairs. Representative Paul Wesselhoft supported the proposal for a permanent secretary position, but a different proposal cosponsored by Earl Sears was eventually passed. John Kevin Stitt (born December 28, 1972) is an American businessman and politician serving as the 28th governor of Oklahoma since 2019. A member of the Republican Party, he was elected in 2018, defeating Democrat and former state Attorney General Drew Edmondson with 54.3% of the vote. Stitt was reelected to a second term in 2022, defeating Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister, a Republican turned Democrat, with 55.4% of the vote. Oklahoma Secretary Of State
The Secretary of State of the State of Oklahoma is the chief clerical officer of Oklahoma and a member of the Oklahoma Governor's Cabinet. The Secretary of State is the only appointed constitutional member of the separation of powers, executive branch of the Oklahoma state government. The office of Secretary of State was elective from statehood until 1975 when the Constitution was amended and it became an appointive office, running concurrent with the Governor effective in 1979. The Cherokee Nation ( or ) is the largest of three list of federally recognized tribes, federally recognized tribes of Cherokees in the United States. It includes people descended from members of the Cherokee Nation (1794–1907), Old Cherokee Nation who relocated, due to increasing pressure, from the Southeast to Indian Territory and Cherokees who were forced to relocate on the Trail of Tears. Chris Benge (born September 9, 1962) is an American Republican politician from the U.S. state of Oklahoma, who served as the 33rd Oklahoma Secretary of State from 2013 to 2016. Benge was appointed to serve as Secretary of State by Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin on November 8, 2013. The Cherokee (; , or ) people are one of the Indigenous peoples of the Southeastern Woodlands of the United States.
