National Virus Reference Laboratory
The National Virus Reference Laboratory (NVRL) is located in UCD, Dublin, Ireland and is affiliated to the University College Dublin School of Medicine. The NVRL provides a diagnostic and reference service for clinicians in Ireland investigating viral infections. For over forty years, the NVRL have provided a virology diagnostic service to the Irish health service. Dublin (; , or ) is the capital and largest city of Ireland. Cillian De Gascun
Cillian de Gascun, MD, MRCPI, FRCPath, is an Irish consultant virologist who has served as Director of the National Virus Reference Laboratory in UCD since 2013. He previously served as the Chair of the NPHET Coronavirus Expert Advisory Group from 5 February 2020 to February 2022. Medical career De Gascun graduated with a BA MB BCh BAO from Trinity College, Dublin in 1998. While completing senior registrar training in clinical microbiology and virology at the National Virus Reference Laboratory, he completed an MD at University College Dublin and was made a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists. De Gascun spent two years as a consultant virologist with Surrey Pathology Services in the United Kingdom before he was appointed Laboratory Director of the National Virus Reference Laboratory in UCD in 2013. Coronavirus Expert Advisory Group
The National Public Health Emergency Team for COVID-19 (NPHET) (; ) was a National Public Health Emergency Team within Ireland's Department of Health that oversaw and provided national direction, support, guidance and expert advice on developing and implementing a strategy to control the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in Ireland. This NPHET was established on 27 January 2020 in order to deal with the emerging SARS-CoV-2 problem. It was disbanded in February 2022 after the majority of COVID-19 restrictions were removed. A new advisory group was established on 8 April 2022. Background NPHET was monitoring the spread of the virus before it was confirmed to have reached Ireland. The COVID-19 pandemic in the Republic of Ireland is part of the worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) () is part of Ireland's Health Service Executive. History Establishment HPSC was set up in 1998 and was formerly known as the National Disease Surveillance Centre (NDSC). Activities HPSC produces annual epidemiological reports covering all areas of infectious and communicable disease surveillance carried out in Ireland.
