The secretary of state for science, innovation and technology is a secretary of state in the government of the United Kingdom, with responsibility for the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. The UK Government Chief Scientific Adviser (GCSA) is the personal adviser on science and technology-related activities and policies to the Prime Minister and the Cabinet. They are also the head of the Government Office for Science. Many individual government departments have departmental Chief Scientific Advisers (CSA). The GCSA is involved in recruiting CSAs, and meets regularly with CSAs to identify priorities, challenges and strategies. Liam Maxwell
Liam Maxwell (born June 1968) is a British technology executive and public servant. From April 2016 to August 2018, he was the UK's first National Technology Adviser, having been the UK's first Chief Technology Officer (CTO), as part of the Government Digital Service. Government career Maxwell was a technology policy adviser to the Conservative Party in the run-up to the general election in 2010, helping write their manifesto, and following the election he started advising the new coalition administration. In June 2011, Maxwell formally joined the government, taking an apolitical civil service position as Director of "ICT futures" in the Cabinet Office under John Suffolk as Government Chief Information Officer and Ian Watmore as Chief Operating Officer of the Efficiency and Reform Group. Patrick Vallance
Patrick John Thompson Vallance, Baron Vallance of Balham (born 17 March 1960), is a British physician, scientist, life peer, and clinical pharmacologist who has served as Minister of State for Science in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology since July 2024. He previously served as HM Government chief scientific adviser from 2018 to 2023. From 1986 to 1995, Vallance taught at St George's Hospital Medical School, where his research concentrated on vascular biology and endothelial cell physiology. In 1995, he was appointed a professor at UCL Medical School, and in 2002 he became head of UCL's department of medicine. The Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) is the United Kingdom's national academy of engineering. The Academy was founded in June 1976 as the Fellowship of Engineering with support from Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who became the first senior fellow and remained so until his death. The Fellowship was incorporated and granted a royal charter on 17 May 1983 and became the Royal Academy of Engineering on 16 March 1992. It was established on 7 February 2023 by a cabinet reshuffle under the Rishi Sunak premiership.
