The National Radio Television Foundation () or EIRT () was the Greek state broadcaster founded in 1970, during the junta. In 1975 it converted to ERT. History The EIRT was the fourth state broadcasting organisation of Greece and the first state TV operator in Greece. The first broadcasting organisation of Greece was the Radio Broadcast Service (; /YRE), which was replaced by Radio Station Athens (; /RSA), founded by the 4th of August Regime of Ioannis Metaxas in 1938. The second operator was Radio Broadcasting Anonymous Company (; /AERE), again with Radio Station Athens, which was established during the Occupation. The Greek junta or Regime of the Colonels was a Right-wing politics, right-wing military junta that ruled Greece from 1967 to 1974. On 21 April 1967, a group of colonels with CIA backing 1967 Greek coup d'état, overthrew the caretaker government a month before 1967 Greek legislative election, scheduled elections which Georgios Papandreou's Centre Union was favoured to win. The dictatorship was characterised by policies such as anti-communism, restrictions on civil liberties, and the imprisonment, torture, and internal exile in Greece, exile of Greek anti-junta movement, political opponents. The Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (), commonly shortened to ERT (), is the state-owned public radio and television broadcaster of Greece. History Overview ERT began broadcasting in 1938 as the Radio Broadcasting Service or YRE (). Following a government decision, the original company was abolished on 11 June 2013, with its 2,656 employees protesting against the closure and continuing broadcasting via a satellite transmission using European Broadcasting Union equipment. The 4th of August Regime (), commonly also known as the Metaxas regime (, ''Kathestós Metaxá''), was a dictatorial regime under the leadership of General Ioannis Metaxas that ruled the Kingdom of Greece from 1936 to 1941. On 4 August 1936, Metaxas, with the support of King George II, suspended the Greek parliament and went on to preside over a conservative, staunchly anti-communist and ultranationalist government under the ideology of Metaxism, which has been described either as an authoritarian conservative system or as a Greek variation of Fascism;; a middle position is that it was a regime with a strong Fascist component or a para-fascist regime. Ioannis Metaxas
Ioannis Metaxas (; 12 April 187129 January 1941) was a Greek military officer and politician who was dictator of Greece from 1936 until his death in 1941. He governed constitutionally for the first four months of his tenure, and thereafter as the strongman (politics), strongman leader of the 4th of August Regime following his appointment by George II of Greece, King George II. Born to an aristocratic family in Ithaca (island), Ithaca, Metaxas took part in the Greco-Turkish War (1897), Greco-Turkish War of 1897 and the Balkan Wars (1912–13), and quickly rose through the ranks of the Hellenic Army. Georgios Papadopoulos (; ; 5 May 1919 – 27 June 1999) was a Greek military officer and dictator who led a coup d'etat in Greece in 1967 and became the country's Prime Minister from 1967 to 1973. He also was the President of Greece under the junta in 1973, following a referendum. However, after the effective suppression of the Athens Polytechnic uprising, he was, in turn, overthrown by hardliner Dimitrios Ioannidis, in a string of events that would culminate in the fall of the regime in 1974. The Broadcasting House or House of Radio () is an office and broadcasting installation building in Athens, Greece. It currently houses the Greek state broadcaster, the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation.
