The National Museum of Intelligence and Special Operations is a future private museum in the United States, planned for the area of Ashburn, Virginia. As a private museum project of The Office of Strategic Services Society, it was recognized in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2023. The museum was designed by architect Curtis Fentress with roughly of exhibit space, a lobby, and 200-seat educational space. Ashburn is a unincorporated settlement and census-designated place (CDP) in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. At the 2020 United States census, its population was 46,349, up from 3,393 in 1990. It is northwest of Washington, D.C., and part of the Washington metropolitan area. Ashburn is a major hub for Internet traffic due to its many data centers. Etymology The name Ashburn is believed to have originated from "Ashburn Farm," a 1,236-acre estate originally owned by John Janney, a prominent 19th-century Quakers, Quaker lawyer and politician who served as president of Virginia's Secession Convention in 1861. The property was later purchased by George Lee III in the 1870s, who is thought to have named it "Ashburn" either for the Fraxinus, ash trees that dotted the landscape or possibly as a reference to the ash-colored soil or barn fires that had previously occurred in the area. Curtis Fentress
Curtis Worth Fentress (born 1947) is an American architect. He is currently the principal-in-charge of design at Fentress Architects, an international design studio he founded in Denver, Colorado in 1980. Fentress' work on Denver International Airport, Incheon International Airport and his modernization of Los Angeles International Airport have garnered recognition for design excellence and outstanding "airside-to-curbside" traveler experience. In 2023 he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree by North Carolina State University. Career Fentress graduated from North Carolina State University's College of Design, School of Architecture in 1972. After graduation, Fentress early work was at I.M. OSS Society
Formerly known as the Veterans of the OSS, the OSS Society is the association of veterans of the Office of Strategic Services, dedicated to preserving the legacy of the famed intelligence agency. The Veterans of the OSS was founded in 1947 by General William Donovan. In 1997, the name OSS Society was adopted, and the Society moved to Washington, DC. The OSS Society is currently in efforts with other IC organizations to create a National Museum of Intelligence and Special Operations in Virginia.
