''National Customs'' () is a 1935 Chinese film directed by Luo Mingyou and Zhu Shilin. The film was silent film star Ruan Lingyu's last performance before she died in 1935. This film is a propaganda film promoting the New Life Movement, which was launched in 1934. Luo Mingyou
Lo Ming-yau (1900–1967) or Luo Mingyou was a Hong Kong entrepreneur and filmmaker, and a pioneer of Chinese cinema. His uncle Lo Wen-kan (羅文榦, Luo Wengan) was a major politician during the early Republican period. Lo Ming-yau founded the Hwa Peh Film Company (華北電影公司) in Beijing in 1927. In 1930, Hwa Peh Film Company merged with Lai Man-Wai's China Sun Motion Picture Company and a few other companies in Shanghai to become United Photoplay Service, one of the biggest film studios in China. In 1936 Lo Ming-yau was forced to withdraw from United Photoplay Service and later made his living as a Christian priest. Zhu Shilin
Zhu Shilin () (27 July 1899 – 5 January 1967), also romanised as Chu Shek Lin, was a Chinese film director and screenwriter, born in Taicang, Jiangsu, China. Zhu began his career in the thriving film industry of Shanghai, directing actresses like Ruan Lingyu with the Lianhua Film Company. After the war, Zhu moved to Hong Kong, where he founded the Longma Film Company along with fellow Shanghai emigrant Fei Mu. Between 1930 and 1964, he directed 80 films. Ruan Lingyu
Ruan Lingyu (born Ruan Fenggen; April 26, 1910 – March 8, 1935), also known by her English name Lily Yuen, was a Chinese silent film actress. One of the most prominent Chinese film stars of the 1930s, her exceptional acting ability and suicide at the age of 24 led her to become an icon of Chinese cinema. Early life Ruan was born to a working class family in Shanghai, and her ancestral home is in Xiangshan County, Guangdong, Xiangshan, Guangdong. Her father died when she was young, and her mother brought her up working as a housemaid. Career Early acting career In 1926, to help make ends meet, Ruan signed up for the prominent Mingxing Film Company. She made her first film at the age of 16. Lim Cho Cho
Florence Lim (21 January 1905 – 16 February 1979), better known as Lim Cho-cho, was a Chinese Canadian actress in the cinema of the Republic of China and British Hong Kong from 1925 to 1954. She was the second wife of filmmaker Lai Man-Wai and the mother of actors Lai Hang and Lai Suen. Gigi Lai is her granddaughter. Zheng Junli
Zheng Junli (December 6, 1911 – April 23, 1969) was a Chinese actor and director born in Shanghai and who rose to prominence in the golden age of Chinese Cinema. His films ''The Spring River Flows East'' and ''Crows and Sparrows'' are widely considered classics of Chinese cinema. He was severely persecuted during the Cultural Revolution and died in prison. New Life Movement
The New Life Movement () was a government-led civic campaign in the 1930s Republic of China to promote cultural reform and Neo-Confucian social morality and to ultimately unite China under a centralised ideology following the emergence of ideological challenges to the status quo. Chiang Kai-shek as head of the government and the Chinese Nationalist Party launched the initiative on 19 February 1934 as part of an anti-Communist campaign, and soon enlarged the campaign to target the whole nation. Chiang and his wife, Soong Mei-ling, who played a major role in the campaign, advocated a life guided by four virtues, '' lǐ'' (禮/礼, proper rite), '' yì'' (義/义, righteousness or justice), ''lián'' (廉, honesty and cleanness) and ''chǐ'' (恥/耻, shame; sense of right and wrong).
