National Cooperative Highway Research Program
The National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) conducts research in problem areas that affect highway planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance in the United States. Spearheaded by the Transportation Research Board (TRB), part of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine, it is jointly supported by federal agencies, state departments of transportation (DOTs), and other nonprofit organizations. Funding The National Cooperative Highway Research Program was established in 1962 under TRB. Governments needed to tackle what Rex Marion Whitton, Rex M. Whitton termed “clearly a supreme challenge to research”: moving people and goods in cities by using a fixed percentage of highway funding dedicated to research. Transportation Research Board
The Transportation Research Board (TRB) is a division of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. TRB's mission is to mobilize expertise, experience, and knowledge to anticipate and solve complex transportation-related challenges. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), also known as the National Academies, is a Congressional charter, congressionally chartered organization that serves as the collective scientific national academy of the United States. Rex Marion Whitton
Rex Marion Whitton (August 7, 1898 – July 7, 1981) was an American administrator. He retired as Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration on December 30, 1966, after a career of public service that spanned nearly the entire history of modern highway construction in the United States.
