National Coding Week
National Coding Week was founded by former headteacher Richard Rolfe and tech entrepreneur Jordan Love, who was appointed EU Code Week Ambassador for the UK. It took place during the week commencing September 21, 2014 with the aim of helping adults to improve their digital literacy in order to fill the growing skills gap. The week is run by volunteers in hubs, libraries, schools, businesses and NGOs with the intention of supporting adults to learn digital skills including coding. Richard Rolfe and Jordan Love were inspired to create the week when they trained a group of unemployed people in coding skills which eventually led to many of them getting jobs. The EU predicts a significant number of digital jobs being unfilled by 2020 due to a skills shortage. Richard Rolfe
Richard Rolfe is the former headteacher of Le Rocquier School, Jersey. He was appointed in 2003* and has been credited with turning around the school after the school was singled out for criticism in a report about problem children by UK education expert Kathie Bull*. He succeeded Geoff Smith who was headteacher for 2 terms*. During his tenure Richard Rolfe paid off the budget deficit, increased student numbers from a low of 695 to a high of 915 and project managed a complete rebuild of the school*. The project cost £27 million and was designed to deliver a school able to accommodate 900 children which earned him praise from the Jersey business community. Prince Andrew
Prince Andrew, Duke of York (Andrew Albert Christian Edward; born 19 February 1960) is a member of the British royal family. Timothy Paul Lovejoy (born 28 March 1968) is an English television presenter best known for hosting Saturday morning football programme '' Soccer AM'' with Helen Chamberlain for over a decade and ''BT Sports Panel'' on Saturday mornings. He presents '' Sunday Brunch'' on Channel 4. Career Early career Lovejoy began his television career as a covering VJ for MTV. He then joined Planet 24, working as a researcher for '' The Big Breakfast'' before going on to produce the show. Ken Skates
Kenneth Christian Skates (born 2 April 1976) is a Welsh Labour politician who has served as Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales since March 2024. Skates has represented the constituency of Clwyd South in the Senedd since the election of 2011. He is an alumnus of the University of Cambridge, and worked as a journalist prior to becoming a politician. In September 2014 he became the deputy minister for Culture, Tourism and Sport. Computer Science Education In The United Kingdom
Computer science education in the United Kingdom is carried out in the UK mostly from the age of 11. It is a predominantly male subject. In their teenage years, around 3% of girls are interested in computing as a career, as opposed to 17% of boys. History 1980s Secondary schools taught logic, hardware and binary up to the age of 16 together with the programming language BASIC. 1990s Computer science was taught much less across schools up to 16. Computer science was largely only taught from 16 to 18. 2000s Computer science was infrequently taught in schools up to the age of 16. 2010s The 2010 general election would result in a swift change in education policy on computer science education across England. The subject had not been taught as widespread as it could have been, and much more emphasis would now be placed on developing hard-core computing skills, and for primary schools too.
