National Awakening (Iceland)
National Awakening – People's Movement (, ÞPM) was a social-democratic political party in Iceland. The party was founded around Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, future Prime Minister of Iceland. History The party was formed in 1994 in preparation for the 1995 parliamentary election; one of the co-founders was Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir after she lost an internal election for the leadership of the Social Democratic Party. She was joined by members of the People's Alliance. In the 1995 parliamentary elections, the party won 7.2% of the vote and four seats. On 2 October 1996, its members of parliament joined the Social Democratic Party to form a unified parliamentary group. For the 1999 parliamentary elections it formed the United Front electoral alliance with the Social Democratic Party and the People's Alliance and the Women's List, winning 30% of the vote and 20 seats. Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir
Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir (; born 4 October 1942) is an Icelandic politician, who served as prime minister of Iceland from 2009 to 2013. Elected as an MP from 1978 to 2013, she was appointed as Iceland's Minister of Social Affairs and Social Security, serving from 1987 to 1994, and from 2007 until 2009. In 1994, when she lost a bid to head the Social Democratic Party, she raised her fist and declared "''Minn tími mun koma!''" ("My time will come!"), a phrase that became a popular Icelandic expression. Later in 1994, she left the party and formed her own party, National Awakening (''Þjóðvaki''), with her as leader. The party received 7.1% of the popular vote in the 1995 parliamentary election and four elected MPs. In 1996 all of the MPs joined the Social Democratic Party. Women's List
The Women's List or Women's Alliance (), also called Kvennalistinn and abbreviated KL, was a feminist political party in Iceland that took part in national politics from 1983 to 1999. The party held three seats in the parliament elected in 1983, six seats in 1987, five seats in 1991 and three seats in 1995. In 1999, it formed an alliance with three other left wing and centre-left parties called the Social Democratic Alliance, which then merged into a party by that name in 2000. However, about half the members of the Women's List disapproved of this and chose to join the Left-Green Movement instead. Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir, former leader of the Alliance and former Minister of Foreign Affairs started her political career in the Women's List, and was Mayor of Reykjavík as a member of that party. The Social Democratic Party () was a social-democratic political party in Iceland. It was founded in 1916, as the political representation of the trade unions of Iceland. History In 1920, its first member of the Althing, the Icelandic parliament, Jón Baldvinsson was elected. The party would contest elections to the Althing with little success until 1934, when the party obtained 10 parliamentary seats. Iceland shifted towards a proportional representation system later that year which political scientist Amel Ahmed attributes to the rising electoral threat that the Social Democratic Party posed to the Independence Party and Progressive Party. The People's Alliance () was an electoral alliance in Iceland from 1956 to 1968 and a socialist political party from 1968 to 1998. History In 1916, the Social Democratic Party (''Alþýðuflokkurinn'') was formed in Iceland. In 1930 the party split, leading to the formation of the Communist Party of Iceland (''Kommúnistaflokkur Íslands''), recognised as the Icelandic section of the Communist International. In 1937 the social democrats suffered another split, and the splinter group unified itself with the communists forming the Socialist Party (''Sósíalistaflokkurinn''). However, the new party did not become a ComIntern member as its forerunner. The first chairman of the People's Alliance was Ragnar Arnalds.
