National Amphitheatre, Sydney
The National Amphitheatre was a boxing stadium and entertainment venue located at 73–75 Castlereagh Street, Sydney, New South Wales. It was later rebuilt by the Fuller brothers as a theatre for vaudeville productions and underwent several refurbishments and renaming over time. History Jim Brennan's National Sporting Club hall, located on Castlereagh Street, near King Street, was reopened on 20 November 1906 as "Brennan's National Amphitheatre" to host a fight between Mike Williams of South Africa and Billy McCall. Castlereagh Street is a major street located in the Sydney central business district in New South Wales, Australia. The street runs north-to-south, in a one way direction only. Description Castlereagh Street's northern terminus is at the junction of Hunter Street, with its southern terminus at the junction with Hay Street, near Belmore Park. Vaudeville (; ) is a theatrical genre of variety entertainment which began in France in the middle of the 19th century. Sir Benjamin John Fuller (20 March 1875 – 10 March 1952) was an English-born Australian theatrical entrepreneur, best known for establishing the theatre company that bears his name. Biography Benjamin John Fuller was born on 20 March 1875 in Shoreditch, London to compositor John Fuller (senior) and Harriett, ''née'' Jones. From December 1884 to February 1885 young Ben appeared in a juvenile production of ''The Pirates of Penzance'' at the Savoy Theatre; two years later he was a member of Montague Robey's Midget Minstrels and later joined Warwick Gray's Juvenile Opera Company. Ben's father, John Fuller Snr., a tenor, gave up his day job as a compositor when he was invited to join the songwriter Harry Hunter's Mohawk Minstrels in October 1881. Harry Rickards (4 December 1843 – 13 October 1911), born Henry Benjamin Leete, was an English-born baritone, comedian and theatre owner, most active in vaudeville and stage, first in his native England and then Australia after emigrating in 1871. Early life Rickards was born in Stratford, London, England, the son of Benjamin Halls Leete, a printer and later chief engineer of the Egyptian railways and his wife Mary (née Watkins) Harry was also intended to be an engineer. He had been forbidden during his apprenticeship to attend theatres by his Puritan parents. He married Caroline Hayden on 10 March 1862 at Bromley.
