Nathan C. Price
Nathan C. Price was an American engineer and inventor. He made substantial contributions to several US aircraft projects during the first half of the twentieth century. Early life Nathan Cozens Price was born 20 December 1904 at Montclair, New Jersey. He was named for his grandfather. The 1940 US Census lists his age 35, birth of himself and father in New Jersey and mother in New York. As an Eagle Scout, Nathan was a bodyguard for Prince of Wales in November 1919. He graduated from Glen Ridge High School, Montclair, New Jersey, in 1923. A news item October 6, 1923 in Princeton, New Jersey, notes that “Nathan C. Price, of Glen Ridge, a graduate of the Glen Ridge High School, was given a scholarship from the individual scholarship funds to attend Princeton University.” He is listed as a resident at 66 Clark Street, Glen Ridge, in 1926. Clarence Leonard "Kelly" Johnson (February 27, 1910 – December 21, 1990) was an American aeronautical engineering, aeronautical and Systems engineering, systems engineer. He is recognized for his contributions to a series of important aircraft designs, most notably the Lockheed U-2 and Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, SR-71 Blackbird. Besides the first production aircraft to exceed mach number, Mach 3, he also produced Lockheed F-104 Starfighter, the first fighter capable of Mach 2, Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star, the United States' first operational jet fighter, as well as Lockheed P-38 Lightning, the first fighter to exceed 400 mph, and many other contributions to various aircraft. Hans Von Ohain
Hans Joachim Pabst von Ohain (14 December 191113 March 1998) was a German physicist, engineer, and the designer of the first aircraft to use a turbojet engine. Together with Frank Whittle and Anselm Franz, he has been described as the co-inventor of the turbojet engine. However, the historical timelines show that von Ohain was still a university student when, in January 1930, Whittle filed his first patent for a turbojet engine and successfully tested his first engine in April 1937, some 6 months before von Ohain. Frank Whittle
Air Commodore Sir Frank Whittle, (1 June 1907 – 8 August 1996) was an English engineer, inventor and Royal Air Force (RAF) air officer. He is credited with co-creating the turbojet engine. A patent was submitted by Maxime Guillaume in 1921 for a similar invention which was technically unfeasible at the time. Whittle's jet engines were developed some years earlier than those of Germany's Hans von Ohain, who designed the first-to-fly turbojet engine as well as Austria’s Anselm Franz. Whittle demonstrated an aptitude for engineering and an interest in flying from an early age. Lockheed L-133
The Lockheed L-133 was an exotic design started in 1939 which was proposed to be the first jet fighter of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) during World War II. The radical design was to be powered by two axial-flow turbojets with an unusual blended wing-body canard design capable of 612 mph (985 km/h) in level flight. The USAAF rejected the 1942 proposal, but the effort speeded the development of the USAAF's first successful operational jet fighter, the P-80 Shooting Star, which did see limited service near the end of war. The P-80 was a less radical design with a single British-based Allison J33 engine, with a conventional tail. Lockheed J37
The Lockheed J37 (company designation L-1000) was one of the first turbojet engines designed in the United States.Norton 2008, p. 221. It was not considered very important when its development was first begun in the 1930s, and it was allowed to languish. By the time it was developed enough for production use, other engines, some British-derived, had surpassed it in performance. The design was later converted to a turboprop, the T35 and still later sold to Wright Aeronautical, where it saw some interest for use on what would become the B-52 Stratofortress, before that design moved to jet power.
