Nasram
Nasram (1960 – after 1970), also known as Nasram II, was an American-bred Thoroughbred race horse and sire who was trained in the United States and France. His early career was undistinguished but in July 1964 he recorded an upset win over Santa Claus in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Nasram was retired from racing at the end of the season and stood as a breeding stallion in America and Germany. Background Nasram was a bay horse bred in Kentucky by his owners Mr and Mrs Howell E. Jackson. He was sired by Nasrullah who was the Leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland in 1951 and went on to become the Leading sire in North America on five occasions. Nasram's dam, La Mirambule won the Prix Vermeille in 1952 and was later bought by the Jackson's and exported to America. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years or older. Prix Du Lys
The Prix du Lys is a Group 3 flat horse race in France open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and geldings. It is run at Longchamp over a distance of 2,400 metres (about 1½ miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in May. History The event is named after Le Lys, a small forest close to Chantilly on the left bank of the Oise river. It was established in 1922, and was originally open to colts and fillies, but not geldings. Its distance was 2,400 metres. It was initially restricted to horses not entered for the Prix du Jockey Club or the Prix de Diane. The Prix du Lys was cancelled in 1940, and was held at Longchamp in 1941 and 1942. Nasrullah (horse)
Nasrullah (March 2, 1940 – May 26, 1959) was a Thoroughbred racehorse that was bred in Ireland and trained in the United Kingdom before becoming a champion sire in both Europe and North America. As a two-year-old, he won the Coventry Stakes and finished second in the Middle Park Stakes, ending the year as the top-rated colt of his generation. In the following season, he became increasingly difficult to manage, and his temperament compromised his racing career. He was the beaten favourite in the 2,000 Guineas and finished a close third in the Derby Stakes before winning the Champion Stakes. As a breeding stallion he stood in England, Ireland, and the United States and had great success in each location. Santa Claus (1961–1970) was a British-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He is most notable for his achievements as a three-year-old in 1964 when he won the Irish 2,000 Guineas, The Derby, and the Irish Derby. His performances earned him the title of British Horse of the Year. Background Santa Claus was a dark-coated bay stallion standing a little over 16.1 hands high, bred in Warwickshire by Dr F Smorfitt. He was sired by the St Leger winner Chamoissaire out of Aunt Clara, a mare who failed to win in her three racecourse appearances. Santa Claus was first sent to the sales as a weanling in December 1961 at Newmarket, where he was sold for 800 guineas. A year later he was returned to the sales and was bought for 1,200 guineas by the Irish division of the British Bloodstock Agency acting on behalf of John Ismay and Mrs Darby Rogers. Everglades Stakes
The Everglades Stakes was an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Hialeah Park in Hialeah, Florida. For three-year-old horses, the mile race was run on dirt until 1994 when it was converted to a race on turf. It was elevated to Grade III status in 1999. Raced for two-year-old fillies in 1939 and 1940, as a result of World War II, there was no race run between 1941 and 1945. On its return in 1946, it was changed to a race for three-year-olds as an important prep race for the Flamingo Stakes that would attract some of the very best horses in the United States. In 2000, the race was held on the dirt at Gulfstream Park then was run for the last time ever back at Hialeah in 2001 after which the track closed. It is run at Baden-Baden over a distance of 2,400 metres (about 1½ miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in early September. The inaugural running was part of a three-day festival which celebrated the opening of Baden-Baden's Iffezheim Racecourse. The race was shortened to 2,800 metres in 1887.
