Narewka (river)
The Narewka (; Belarusian ''Нараўка'') River is a left-bank tributary of the Narew River in western Belarus and northeastern Poland. Etymology The Narewka River's name comes from a Proto-Indo-European root, ''*nr'', primarily associated with "water" (compare Narva, Neretva, Neris, Ner, and Nur). Geography The Narewka flows through the European region known as the ''Wysoczyzny Podlasko – Bialoruskie'' (Podlasie–Belarus Plateau) in Poland's Podlasie Province and Belarus' Hrodna Voblast. A major part of the river flows through the Białowieża Forest. The Narewka River is the main watercourse of the Polish part of the Białowieża Forest. The river is 61.1 km long, including 21.7 kilometers in the Republic of Belarus. Catchment (basin) covers an area Narewka 710.7 km sq., of which the Polish border is 491.32 km. Ossolineum
Ossoliński National Institute ( pl, Zakład Narodowy im. Ossolińskich, ZNiO), or the Ossolineum is a Polish cultural foundation, publishing house, archival institute and a research centre of national significance founded in 1817 in Lwów (now Lviv). Located in the city of Wrocław since 1947, it is the second largest institution of its kind in Poland after the ancient Jagiellonian Library in Kraków. Its publishing arm is the oldest continuous imprint in Polish since the early 19th century. It bears the name of its founder, Polish nobleman, Count Józef Maksymilian Ossoliński (1748-1826). Nowe Lewkowo is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Narewka, within Hajnówka County, Podlaskie Voivodeship, in north-eastern Poland, close to the border with Belarus, on the river Narewka. History Following the joint German-Soviet invasion of Poland, which started World War II in September 1939, the village was first occupied by the Soviet Union until 1941, and then by Germany until 1944. Narewka
Narewka ( be, На́раўка) is a village in eastern Poland, with its population estimated at 935 residents (as of 2011). It is located in Gmina Narewka, Hajnówka County, within Podlaskie Voivodeship. The village is located near Poland's border with Belarus. Many of its residents belong to Poland's Belarusian minority. The village has Polish Catholic and Belarusian Eastern Orthodox churches. It used to have a synagogue, but it was destroyed by the local Jewish population, angered after the Red Army, which had invaded Poland in 1939, desecrated the synagogue by turning it into a storage building. Narewka's significant Jewish community eventually perished in the Holocaust and has not been restored.
