Narendra Nath Dhar
Narendra Nath Dhar ( bn, নরেন্দ্রনাথ ধর) (born 7 September 1954) is an Indian classical musician who plays the instrument Sarod. One of the finest exponents of the Shahjahapur/Gwalior Gharana, Gwalior Seniya Gharana, he is not only known for his purist style of play, but also for his own emerging style, through which one can easily distinguish his way of playing from that of others. Early life and training Dhar began his initial training in Sarod under his father Late Nemai Chand Dhar. The early demise of his father was no deterrent in his pursuit of learning and growth. He started training under Pt. Samarendra Nath Sikdar, the then disciple of Pt. Radhika Mohan Maitra. In 1969, Pt Maitra, later brought Dhar under his tutelage and played a crucial role in shaping him into one of the most exciting talents of his generation. Alap
The Alap (; ) is the opening section of a typical North Indian classical performance. It is a form of melodic improvisation that introduces and develops a raga. In dhrupad singing the alap is unmetered, improvised (within the raga) and unaccompanied (except for the tanpura drone), and started at a slow tempo. For people unfamiliar with the raga form, it introduces the mode (the pattern of ascending and perhaps different descending scale) to the listener. It defines the raga, its mood, and the emphasized notes and notes with a secondary role. It's like an invocation. Instead of wholly free improvisation, many musicians perform alap schematically, for example by way of ''vistar'', where the notes of the raga are introduced one at a time, so that phrases never travel further than one note above or below what has been covered before. Sangeet Natak Akademi (The National Academy of Music, Dance and Drama in English) is the national level academy for performing arts set up by the Government of India. History It was set up by the Indian education ministry on 31 May 1952 and became functional the following year, with the appointment of its first chairman, Dr. P. V. Rajamannar. Naushad Ali (25 December 1919 – 5 May 2006) was an Indian music director for Hindi films. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest and foremost music directors of the Hindi film industry. He is particularly known for popularising the use of classical music in films. His first film as an independent music director was ''Prem Nagar'' in 1940. His first musically successful film was ''Rattan'' (1944), followed by 35 silver jubilee hits, 12 golden jubilee and 3 diamond jubilee mega successes. Naushad was conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Bhushan in 1981 and 1992 respectively for his contribution to the Hindi film industry. Amjad Ali Khan
Ustad Amjad Ali Khan (born 9 October 1945) is an Indian classical ''sarod'' player, best known for his clear and fast ekhara taans. Khan was born into a classical musical family and has performed internationally since the 1960s. He was awarded India's second highest civilian honor Padma Vibhushan in 2001. Career and recognition Khan first performed in the United States in 1963 and continued into the 2000s, with his sons. He has experimented with modifications to his instrument throughout his career. Khan played with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and worked as a visiting professor at the University of New Mexico. Radhika Mohan Maitra
Radhika Mohan Maitra (1917–1981) was an Indian sarod player and the guru of Narendra Nath Dhar, Kalyan Mukherjea, Buddhadev Das Gupta, Sanjoy Bandopadhyay, Abanindra Maitra, Pranab Kumar Naha, Samarendra Nath Sikdar, Michael Robbins, and many other musicians of this generation. Maitra was considered an influential figure in 20th century sarod playing and received the title Sangeetacharya. He was among those awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1971. Radhika Mohan Maitra came from a Bengali zamindar family that had a history of musicianship and of patronising that art. At present this is at Talando of Tanore upozila of Rajshahi district in Bangladesh. His grandfather, Lalit Mohan Maitra, was a player of the tabla, his father, Brajendra Mohan, played the sarod, and his mother learned the sitar.
