Narborough Bone Mill
Narborough Bone Mill was a watermill that operated on the River Nar in the west of the English county of Norfolk.”OS Explorer Map” 236, King’s Lynn, Downham Market & Swaffham The watermill was downstream of the village of Narborough. The mill was built in the early part of the 19th century and records show that it was owned by the Marriott Brothers in 1830, who also owned the navigation rights on the river Nar. The site is currently owned by the Munford family of Narborough and is undergoing preservation work following a recent lottery grant. The River Nar is a river in England, a tributary of the River Great Ouse. It rises at Mileham near Litcham in Norfolk and flows 15 miles west through Castle Acre and Narborough (the latter giving the Nar its name), joining the Ouse at King's Lynn.Ordnance Survey (2002). The final section of the river near its mouth was diverted northwards when the Great Ouse was re-routed to a new outfall at King's Lynn after the thirteenth century. Narborough, Norfolk
Narborough is a village of 1405 hectares in the Breckland district of Norfolk, England, with a population of 1,094 at the 2011 census. It is situated in the Nar Valley, with the river Nar flowing through on its way to the River Great Ouse. The villages name probably means 'fortification at the narrow place'. The River Nar is a back-formation from the place-name. The village has a large community centre and associated heritage centre which puts on exhibitions. The parish church is All Saints' in the Benefice of Narborough, and part of the Nar Valley group of parishes. Narborough Primary School serves the village with around ninety pupils and five teachers. Bone Mill
A bone crusher is a device regularly used for crushing animal bones. Bones obtained during slaughter are cleaned, boiled in water and dried for several months. After that, they are suitable for crushing with the special machine into a relatively dry gritty powder which is used as fertilizer. The machine, shown in the picture, is powered by a water wheel. It contains eight S-shaped pairs of cams that raise the crushers alternately and let them fall into material to be crushed. The simple transmission increases the rotation speed of the crusher wheel to 21 rpm from the water wheel speed of about 7 rpm. Bone meal has been used since about 1790 as a fertilizer supplement to ordinary farmyard manure. From about 1880 onwards it was supplanted by chemical fertilizers. The River Cong is a stream in the west of the county of Norfolk, only in length. It is a tributary of the River Babingley. The spring rises in a meadow pool on the Hillington, Norfolk, Hillington side of Manor Farm, Congham.
