Napierville () is a municipality in the Jardins de Napierville Regional County Municipality in Quebec, Canada, situated in the Montérégie administrative region. The population as of the 2021 Canadian Census was 4,020. It is the location of the seat of the Jardins de Napierville Regional County Municipality. It is surrounded by the municipality of Saint-Cyprien-de-Napierville. History The area opened for settlement in the early 19th century. At that time, the lands were part of the Seignory of Léry, owned by Napier Christie Burton who had inherited the seignory upon the death of his father, Gabriel Christie, in 1799. The seignory was looked after by Samuel Potts as temporary agent until 1815, and then by Edme Henry, who managed the Christie seignories for twenty years. In 1822, Edme Henry donated land in Napierville for the construction of a Catholic church. Around 1823, the place was called "Les Côtes", meaning "the hills" and referred to its uneven terrain. Châteauguay—Les Jardins-de-Napierville (formerly Châteauguay—Lacolle) () is a federal electoral district in Quebec. It encompasses a portion of Quebec formerly included in the electoral districts of Beauharnois—Salaberry and Châteauguay—Saint-Constant. Châteauguay—Lacolle was created by the 2012 federal electoral boundaries redistribution and was legally defined in the 2013 representation order. General Napier Christie Burton (born Napier Christie, 31 August 1758 – 2 January 1835) was a senior British Army officer and Member of Parliament. Career Napier Christie was born in America, the only surviving son of General Gabriel Christie of Stirling, Scotland and Montreal, Canada and his wife Sarah, the daughter of John Stevenson of Albany, New York. He took the additional surname of Burton by royal license on the death of his brother-in-law, Captain Richard Burton, in 1784 and inherited his father's estate in 1799. He became an officer in the British Army, joining in 1775 as an ensign in the 22nd Foot. He transferred to the 3rd Foot Guards in 1776 and fought in the American War of Independence as a lieutenant. Edme Henry
Edmund "Edme" Henry (November 15, 1760 – September 14, 1841) was a notary and political figure in Lower Canada. He was born in Longueuil, the son of a surgeon-major in the Régiment Royal Roussillon who settled on Saint-Pierre and Miquelon leaving his wife and family in Quebec. Henry attended the Collège Saint-Raphaël, studied law with Simon Sanguinet, received his commission as a notary in 1783 and set up practice in Montreal. In 1794, he moved to La Prairie. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada for Huntingdon County in 1810. Henry served as a major in the militia during the War of 1812, taking part in the Battle of Châteauguay, and was promoted to lieutenant-colonel in 1822. Henry acted as seigneurial agent for Napier Christie Burton, the son of Gabriel Christie; he was also crown land agent for the seigneury of Prairie-de-la-Madeleine and served as commissioner for roads and bridges.
